I would have to agree on the 850, similar arrangement, similar luxury-performance blend....I always wanted one of those 850CSI's

The 850CSI may have been comfy, but it is a dog. My '90 S4 smoked one repeatedly. There was a compo of the 850 vs GTS back in '94 or '95. They chose the GTS hands down. The 850 was in the 7s 0-60mph. Emphasis on luxury, not on performance. Not bad, just different.

The 928 does get a lot of love. This morning I was approached by three different people on two different occasions about how much they love the look of the car. Again, surprises when I told them the model year, just looks too fresh to be 14 going on 15. In fact, we know that the skin hasn't changed much since '77. A design going on 30 that looks like it could roll out of the factory today as new. Think about that for a minute.

Lets face it, performance times mean little. Not many can feel a second difference in 0-60, not many here drag everyone away from a red light. Forget performance stats, a car is one of those emotional deals. The 928 is a masterpiece of looks and performance. Its shape is timeless because of the amazing curves, lowness, and width. These things also give it its great handling.

I took my weekly ride the other day after a melt of recent snow. It was cold out and i ended up on a road that was covered in snow. It felt like an experiment. With the windows closed, I could only hear the muted rumble of my custom exhaust and the stereo. I could not here the snow compacting under tires like i would in any other car. I got some speed up and hit the brakes, flawless ABS 21 years after manufacture. Later at a few stops i hit the gas a little hard, not enough to burn out but, the effortless torque spun the rear wheel and moved the end sideways until the LSD hooked up and I shot forward.

It is one of the COOLEST cars of all time. The sound, the driving position, the solid chassis, the isolation of the cockpit from the outside, and of course the frog-eyes. It is unique and now super rare, a handbuilt super gt. There are a few new rides that can just about equal the whole package but they are in the 6 figure category. With all the new x-pipes going out now, there will be many with a new appreciation for their 928's.

I don't even own a Shark, and I agree with all of you guys. I've been fortunate enough though to had a ride in a few of them though. As I mentioned earlier, I have a Maseretti Quattroporte and also a Ferrari, and it isn't the same at all. Being a Ferrari owner too, I will agree that the 612 is very expensive, and doesn't have the "total" appeal of a Shark. And trust me, I'm an absolute Ferrari nut too, but I'd take a worked 92-95 Shark over those cars.

You guys on this forum sure do have some sweet cars, I think I might have to hang around here sometimes and learn in case I decide to get one.

Cheers

Yeah, the 850CSi is pretty cool. It would have to be the CSi version with the 6 spd manual and the 380 hp V12, not the 850Ci automatic and the 300 hp V12. One of the older E24 M6's would be nice 928 alternative too.

Of the new stuff, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a gorgeous car and the 2007 Jaguar XK looks similar for several $k less.

Can anyone come up with and apples to apples competitive car? Not one that costs 3-4X as much. If you were looking right now and had, say, a $35K budget, what would it be? So, with a 928 you could spend $25K on a super nice GT and allow $10K for 2-3 years maintenance/repairs/upgrades or buy a Honda S2000. I know, that's not a great choice, but you get the idea. I'm giving away a lot here, as you don't need to allot $35K to own a nice 928. Figure an 87 S4 at $10-12K and use the rest for serious mods.

It would have to be rear wheel drive. The new M3 will have a V-8. That should be about 60 or 70 though.

40k will get you into a C6. 400hp. Another 5k will get you 500hp, with one of the numerous kits for power-adders - want a turbo? Sure. Want a SC? Sure. What about a TS? Sure. Just pick up a magazine and call.

Or spend 35k on a C5 Z-06 and replace the suspension with coil overs and put on a turbo kit. Boom. 800hp.

I love the 928, but I'm not blinded. Hell, I have three.

Bill's made the point I was going to make. I'd love a 612 Scag, or a Maserati Quattroporte, or an old Jag E-type, or a 635 CSi. The list could on, but theses are all great cars that are either new cars out of my price range, used cars out of my price range, or used cars sort of in my price range, that aren't as practical, and will cost more to own or be less reliable.

On care I'd love to have is an Alfa GTV6. My dad had the Alfetta, my friend owned 2. But I remember driving with my dad and his car just dying *while driving it*, and it not starting when it was too hot or too cold. My friend spent tons on his GTV6. My 928 started the other day when it was 10 degrees, no problem, after it had been sitting for a week. I don't worry about driving it, I can fit 2 bikes in the back, or get my skis in it, the driving position fits like a glove, and I believe they've achieved a timeless look. For less money than a new Civic.

This is a question my wife and I discuss from time to time. We've thought about getting rid of the black GTS for cars like the BMW 645/50, the new Corvette Z06, BMW 850 CSI, Maseretti spider (04 or 05 only), Farrari 355 (tight fit for my 5'-17" frame), 03+ SL500, SLK55(again tight fit) and actually bought (and sold) a CLS500, Cayenne S & Turbo (AWESOME vehicle)! But, I could never pull the trigger and decide to part with the GTS. When I walk into the garage and see that beautiful black piece of art I just can't do it. So, instead of getting rid of it we bought an Infiniti M45 (loaded!) for my wife to drive along with the GTS (occasionally on nice days of course ). The scarcity and sheer beauty is just not replaceable with any other car. Sure, the technology is superior today and the power is greater(the M45 has 335 bhp and scoots!) but none of them are 928s!

Even today's advanced technology in new cars ain't always an advantage!

There are a ton of whiz bang gee-gaws on new cars I could very easily live without - and in fact would prefer to live without.

I like Bill's "apples-to-apples" comparo. Given a budget of 35-40K or less, if you want a beautiful car that is luxurious, handles wonderfully, eats up 600 miles in a comfortable day's drive, Doesn't jar the fillings out of your teeth, attracts attention, and carries your luggage with ease, what you gonna get? Yeah, maybe a used sedan of some sort...

$35k??? Hell, I'd say $25k! I paid $15k for my '91GT and will have put about $10k into it by spring (if DR ever starts shipping his SC setup *wink* *wink* ).

I cannot even think of another car that compares from a styling, handeling, speed, & comfort point of view. Of course, my POV may be slightly biased!

How about a 6 speed 540i wagon? If I have to get rid of the 928 because I need more room, that's right up there with what I might get. That or a Saab Viggen. I have a new addition coming to the family, so it might be something that happens, but I think I can manage with the 928 for some time. But this is a pretty big digression from where we started.

Heck, we all know my song. speed world challenge touring car or Grand Am Cup GS performance
for under$20k vs those cars that are over $100k!!

as far as cars that compare, just look at base hp factory ratings and compare the price tags. new e46 m3s and old Z06s come to mind (comparing a GTS street car with a set of headers to the the competition) brakes, handling, upside potential and cost is better with the porsche 928, any doubt?

However, a 944 turbo guy did forward me this. Ive always wondered why we havent seen more pumped up 944 turbo racers out there!

Even today, if you really want a true exotic Grand Touring car that:

1. Is gorgeous,
2. Is powerful,
3. Can carry two people long distances quickly and in real comfort,
4. Has wonderful handling despite the level of comfort,
5. Has easily sufficient luggage capacity, and
6. Has a proven track record of reliability...

What are your choices? Aston Martin? Maybe Bentley Continental. And the Mercedes SL class. Any others?

And think back to the early years of the 928 - I can't think of ANY comparable car on the market at that time.

Can you tell I love my shark?!
an inst. rating and a cherokee 235 w/gps, r-nav, king stack, 4 place intercom and long range tanks works pretty well. and you don't have to sit in traffic or worry about tickets either when you cruise at 140-160mph w/the autopilot on and steppenwolf pounding away on the cd player... and theres nothing like being cleared for take off, ripping down the runway into the air and making that 1st climbing crosswind turn at full power on a cool day w/all systems go yeah baby!

oops - has to be a car... well, a 911sc, ferrari 355, bmw 630csi, pantara, lotus esprite, and NSX are pretty decent rides IMO. but the 928 does fit in that crowd nicely. course, I'm a bit biased too I suppose

however, based on 928 sales during the 80's vs other manufacturers or even P car models at the time, lots of folks seemed to find other choices more attractive back in the day. for fun, you could always ask that question on the C2/C4, vette or NSX board and see what happens hehehe...
