If you like boxes ...... many cars are faster, quicker, bigger, more comfy, but none more beautiful, and none built better, and none nearly as beautiful AND nearly as fast AND nearly as quick AND nearly as well-made AND nearly as reliable ...... all together at the same time. None.

It's like they say: "You can get it better, you can get it cheaper and you can get it quicker .... but no more than 2 of those at the same time"......

I'd love to have an M6 or an Aston Martin. None of the others mentioned really compare to the 928 in my mind... not that I would mind having most of the cars mentioned.

Thats alot of heat.
Don't forget that 951s have thicker cylinder walls than 928s.

I'd definitely say that the 951 meets the original criteria of:

1. Is gorgeous,
2. Is powerful,
3. Can carry two people long distances quickly and in real comfort,
4. Has wonderful handling despite the level of comfort,
5. Has easily sufficient luggage capacity, and
6. Has a proven track record of reliability...

It also has a cruising range of over 500 miles per tank, which is really nice, and is surprisingly quiet at speed. My wife and I took ours on a round trip from NYC to pittsburgh last year and were shocked at how pleasant the car was over long distances.

While I agree the 951 is a gorgeous fast Porche, it has no low-end torque as compared to the 928, it was not designed by Porsche and built by Porsche from the ground up, and the materials used in building it are Volkswagen and Audi parts mostly, whereas the 928 is the opposite. The 944 was intended to be a Volkswagen, but Porsche turned it into something really special. The 928 was always intended to be a supercar. And that it is.

I've owned 944, 944S and 952. I loved them all. But the lack of any kind of action under 4kRPM was not what I was looking for. And the general build quality of the 928, to me, is far superior. Of coure this is all a matter of opinion, but that is my opinion

Why is that? A 5-litre 928 and a 2.5-litre 944 are supposed to have identical cylinder thickness?

They have the same bore diameter. Carl and several others have posted that the 951 blocks have thicker walls than 928s. Porsche probably did it because 951s are turbocharged. 951s also have 5mm (IIRC) shorter decks.

Yes, I agree. The 951 is probably the closest to the criteria, and it's in the same or lower price range. It's clearly more nimble, had better race support, and can be souped up easily. It's not quite the Autobahn cruiser, but we all probably would be very happy with one. Maybe that's what I should have as a track car instead of the OB 928 in my driveway.

you mean the CTSV ?? its 400hp 'cause its the vet motor, and its not supercharged. the speed world challenge engine for the CTSV is made out of the 7 liter block, but i guess they de-stroked it or something. heck, all those cars are cheater cars, so who cares! they are cool though!

The 850CSI, maybe a Mercedes 500SL from the early 90's or whatever its current counterpart is are more directly in the 928 world, big engine, not so big car, minimal to non existent back seat which basically just saves us from the 2 seater insurance freak out) Or could we stretch this to the 1968-70 AMC Javelin and AMX? They were big in Trans Am racing.

I love my 951 to death, but for touring car I like a 928. Even though I don't own one, I think they are timeless beauties with a style of their own. And for the money, I personally don't think that any modern touring car can touch it. But hey, I'm just a visitor here you guys know better than me.

I think you mean the 924. The 944 is almost all porsche....built and designed by.

its hard to really compare a 951 to a 928. We own both and I love both...but, they really are two different worlds.

One is a low end tq v8 Gt cruiser

the other is a nimble rocket box type of car with no decent tq under 3k.

Very different cars. Gotta love porsche
