Jeff, I have a lot of admiration for the job your doing. Your a credit to the forum. I think that I may be as anxious as you to see her done. Then again......

So on the rest of the body, like the doors, fenders, and rear quarters - where you *didn't* do any body work, such as filling in the rub strip holes, and just had good burgandy paint - how did you prep the surface for the primer? Just some serious sanding down to the first layer of original primer? I noticed your visgoth freind was grind on the rear window opening in a prior pic down to the bare metal.

The 78 I bough has some SERIOUS rust issues in the rear quarter windows, and dealership bastards in whatever yeat, probably when the car was very new, drilled holes and riveted the damn S stuff on the car in back, and simply bolted the front soiler on with pot metal american bolts. I took the rivets out, but I need some serious grinding and resrufacing right around those windows so the rust won't creep back. Anyway - very nice color.

Anywhere the paint it good, you CAN just wet sand with 800 grit clean it off with water, and wipe it down with pre solvent and its ready for paint. But it will adhere much better (so you can sleep at night) if you knock the glaze off the clear coat with 400 and then prime it with a poly primer. Its better with the bare metal to use a primer with an etcher in it a dupont poof can hahha really. just light before you hit it with a poly pirmer.

The reason Willie was grinding the rear windows was for just as you had...rust a good enough amount of it to start to bubble the paint a little outside of the window trim at the bottom. We just grinded it out, and put in a thin layer of glass resin, then smoothed it out to new. there will be no more rust there. Unless its neglected. Oh yeh ....NO you dont need to go down to the original primer. Man That would be a very laborious and lengthy chore.. I saw where one of the members went all the way to bare metal on everything. That is awsome and I would have done it also if the car had already been repainted to or three times. Though sometimed built up paint makes the edges look nice and round. haha

Okay then. Thanks Jeff. The 78 will need to be knocked all the way past the RED paint through THAT PRIMER level, and into the SILVER paint from the factory. Or just to the bare metal. Heh. Well, lets rephrase that. The doors, Hood, bumpers, and doors will get some sort of *down to metal* operation, whether chemical or mechanical (sandblasting) and the roof and rear quarters will need to go down as I mentioned to the silver or beyond.

Man, if you are going to cut out all that paint use aircraft remover in an aerosol can for Nicole (hah hah j/k) It makes the job very close to effortless by comparison.

I recognize that - "Aircraft remover" Like it removes aircraft if they are in your way. I think I saw that at Wally World "Walmart"

Hey jeff, project looks incredible. We all appreciate the step-by-step logging of the progress. It is an inspiration. I can only hope my beginning resto progresses as well as yours.

you'd mentioned something about ideas for the interior when you pulled out the rear seats. Sounded like you were eyeing replacing interior parts? I'm looking for some black leather rears in that very exact style. PM me if you might be willing to sell the lower buckets or the entire rear seat setup.

Thanks man, I'm not going far from stock on the interior and will be using all of the seats (sorry about the false hopes man) I have a guy that is going to do my seats (all new leather Black with the center billows a light grey/silver that will match the carpet. (he's gonna do that too.) the center consoles will stay black and the rear seat cusions will be grey as well. All of the head rests will be black embroidered with 928s in silver thread. So I have to reuse everything. BUT IF YOU HAVE SOME THAT ARE REALLY TRASHED. But the foam is still in good shape I can trade since all the leather will be replaced anyway.
Let me know

Dude I got it for $500 and just ended up trading a handgun for it A friend of mine had a towin company and ended up the owner just gave him the title instead of paying a $250 He had been looking out for a bmw or a merc' coup for me to restore to have a nice ride to the gym and just by luck this dropped in my lap. I gotta tell ya I've been really happy ever since haha.

Hey folks?

Can we move any personal accusations off-line? In short - this is NOT the "Judge Judy" show - and I'm certainly not "Judge Judy".

If folks want to make accusations in "public" - then a courtroom is the "correct" venue - not Rennlist. As for me, I'm a little dissappointed as to where this thread has gone. I also know I'm not alone in that feeling......

This thread is closed.

Thanks,

John
