On our weekly bike ride I ran across a 928 just sitting on the side of the road (in a very unusual area for 928s for sure). Stopped to inquire and :
Owned for 14 plus years (not running). Was going to get running for his wife and just didn't. Been in the garage for the whole time. He's retiring so it was getting towed to his shop (ASE Certified mechanic) to get cleaned up and put on craigslist. It's a black on cork 79 5 sp with lsd (yet to be verified), no sunroof, added S4 rear wing,H4s, paint looks original (or a very good repaint), not running (for at least 14 years). 87XXX miles, interior looks OK with some mildew and minor cracks and fading of dash. Overall it looks like a 87K 928.
I have a couple of weeks before he will list it...
Question for the group.
Do I grab it?
What price given the unknowns?
P.S. I'd do all the work myself, so don't factor in mechanics
1. CIS doesn't do well sitting. If you are not familiar with or do not want to do the work yourself, it can cost a a bit to get it sorted out
2. Assume the clutch needs to be serviced. $2k - $3k
3. Without being able to drive it, have to assume the synchros (or at lest 2nd gear) is worn. $3k+ to rebuild
If the paint & interior are nice, it's worth buying. The above mechanicals are easy (relatively speaking)
CIS and headgaskets are my main concern, but not a deal breaker. Hopefully this guy being mechanic that works on foreign cars would have at least drained the fluids....
Looking at it closer later this week....we'll see.

looks nice Tom,
I just bought a similar car from up your way. Last registered in 2004.. To date I have replaced the fuel dist, WUR and injectors. It now runs
Can’t see what’s going on in that center console, but yeah. Believe it or not, sunroof delete was somewhat common back then. Still, super rare. Looks well kept and primal. Non interference motor. Swoop in on that one for the deferred maint price if no records. You wrench yourself, so that is negotiation leverage. Good luck and great example!
You haven't put that thing together yet? Will be nice when done. Not a fan of the auto box. For some reason I have an affinity for adjusting the double disc clutch many many times. Still have the asbestos header wrap in my forearms from doing that one car so many times LOL .
No price on this one as of yet. They threw out a number when we first saw it (which was reasonable) but need to see more before I plunge.

Some assembly required - heater box and dash need reinstalling - $8000/offer
Car has been repainted (pretty good overall). Original color was a dark green, should either have been Oak Green or Olive Green. Any way to tell, there are some hints in the battery tray area, but paint code is missing in the door. Owner has had it since 99 and it was running until 2009ish when he took it off the road to deal with a heater core leak. Never got to it and been stored in heated garage since then.
Exciting part is that there are lots of original pieces on it in good shape and overall doesn't look too molested.
Plan for now is to get it back to the house, clean it up, and concentrate on getting it running before I tackle the interior heater core replacement. I'm sure the list will change as I dig into it.
P.S. One quick question/note of interest. Looking at the passenger fender where there should be a cutout for the "body in white" VIN, but there wasn't one? Is this something that came later (with perhaps the 17 number VINS?).

78-80 are in the engine compartment, visible in reverse in the fender
So I am now the owner of one 79 928 5sp (black on cork) . Cleanup starts this weekend and then I'll assess the remainder. Some really cool "extra" goodies were tossed in too (rare NOS bits).
Requisite photo of 928 on a flatbed Wash day this weekend
Got it all cleaned up and "jammed" into the garage. Turned out pretty good. Found some really cool NOS
parts in the hatch too. Full set of gaskets (although old an probably not useable), new bosch starter, set of round tooth cam gears and crank gear, and a new heater core.
Also see pics below for some other stuff.
Squeeeeeeezed in there! S4 wing gone. Some black silicone to rub off and will put black plugs in there for now till repaint. Idle stabilizer (not for this model). Guess what's in the big box. Pretty cool (I didn't know you could get these)! Round tooth cam gears and crank gear A/C freeze switch? Look at the part number under the cam gear. There were three of these essentially unopened. A/C control head factory fresh!!
