Since I was waiting for the clutch slave and some other parts, I decided to top up the power steering (ATF) and brake fluid. Seems I have a small power steering leak that will probably mean a rebuild or swap out (looks like its near the drivers side boot). Since it was starting and idling so well I figured I should see how it drove . Shut it off, popped into first gear, and cranked the starter. Fired up and off I went around the neighborhood. Ran great with good throttle response. Suspension felt tight and steering was harder than the GT, but could tell there was assist, so it's probably a rack issue or just differences between my GT and the early cars.
Also checked all lights for function and everything was good except the passenger side driving light (cracked lens too). No gauges at all and I noticed the connections for the cluster weren't fully seated so will need to pull the pod and get at those too)
That's it for today. Should get the clutch slave next week and hopefully installed.
Slow but steady progress!!
One more thing I noticed. When putting the seatback (passenger side) forward, the seat actually moves forward ( by motor)? Is this feature or a bug LOL? My 89 doesn't do this.
Got the clutch slave and installed it today. While it was up in the air I bled the brakes too. First time in 14ish years this 928 has driven under its own power! Clutch action was super smooth (and very different from my GT). Been a while since I've driven a double disc 928. Engagement was good so I drove it around the neighborhood. Was able to get all gears and no grinding at all. Synchros must be in good shape. Car ran great. Here's a link to the inaugural drive (Parts 1 and 2).
Part 1 -
And a couple of pics of both 928s out in the sun today (79 and 89GT). Ten years apart and so different but sharing DNA for sure. Each is so cool in their own way!
New week, new project. Got to take the rack out. Looks like it was original. Not too much corrosion except on one end near the tie rod. Sucks doing this job on the ground (jack stands) but got it done. Wasn't able to remove the tie rod ends while under the car, so popped the tie rods off, and took them off the rack once it was out. Boots were rock hard (likely original too) and tie rods, while tight, are probably going to be replaced because I don't want to get under there again once it's all back in LOL. Rack will be sent out for a rebuild, since I don't want to mess it up and have to do this again. Here's a few pics of the day.
Nothing to report this week, still waiting to get the rack rebuilt.
I did organize the work space though and can now watch Dwayne's tutorials on the big screen in garage!!!
If you have an antique vehicle registration, you can run Year Of Manufacture plates in Illinois so long as your real plates are carried in the car somewhere.

Just for the record, I tossed that plate on there temporarily while I'm working on it in the garage. The plate is slated for the wall near the neon Porsche sign.
In WA State you can have one plate in the rear if it's the "Classic Car" plate (which I have). One can also find a plate from the Year of Manufacture (plus one year either side) so I could find some 78 through 80 WA State plates but I have to run two plates (front and back). Back in 79 WA State had white plates with green letters/numbers. Hard to find in good condition, but I'm looking.
I just moved out of Washington, and my 78 was registered with a year appropriate classic plate that I never actually installed on the car.
My car is hopefully going to catch up with me in the next week or so, and that plate should still be in the passenger seat.
It's yours for shipping if you want it.

I'd be interested for sure. Send me a pm when you get it and we'll go from there. I take it you got rid of all your parts in your storage unit? I was really hoping to get there and grab that engine and other stuff but got hit with Covid that day and was out of circulation for a bit.
The spare engine went to one of the PWN 928 group members located semi-nearby in Tacoma.
The one from the car ended up coming with me to OK, and the set of wheels went to one of the guys at the shop who wanted to try using them with his VW.
