Default Upgrade from Carrera T to GT3?

Hi,

I bought my 991.2 Carrera T new in April 2018. Have enjoyed nearly 57,000 miles in it over the last 6 years.

Had planned to keep it forever, but due to an unexpected redundancy payment due soon, I’ll have the means to upgrade to a 991.2 GT3.

I’m in the UK and my current car has had lots of mods, many done at Litchfield Motors. It’s currently making at least 480bhp, is on lowered suspension, spacers, Apex forged wheels, new manifolds, Remus silencer and recently installed Numeric Racing shifter & cables.

Trouble is, every time I see a GT3, the ‘want factor’ is very strong!

It would be a sole car and daily driver.

Thoughts would be welcome, especially from folks who moved from a 991.2 T or C2 or S to a GT3.

Cheers!

Simon

I am in the UK and am lucky enough to have a 991.2 gt3 (manual). I think it is perfectly fine for UK roads - not too wide & the ride quality is decent enough. It isn't a daily, for me, but could be, without issue.

I have fitted a DSC controller, which does improve the ride comfort further and would recommend, but I would say go for it!

Thank you!

If I do go for it, as it’d be my daily, I’d opt for a comfort spec, so not the Clubsport pack.

Am open-minded about manual or PDK. Probably £120k to £130k price range. Would love a Touring, but I think they’re rarer and go for a lot more. Some seem to have had quite a few previous owners, but I guess that shouldn’t be a worry if the car checks out and has a full service history?

Mine had 6 owners when I bought it at 7,400 miles & 4 years old (same owner twice who missed it!!). They were flipped a lot, as they went up in value for a time (I paid more for it than it was new).

I bought from an OPC, for the warranty, albeit a lot are sold with a Porsche warranty as the warranty transfers and are on SoR.

Tourings are £40K+ more expensive.

Comfort should save you some money, as people like the bucket seats & often the clubsport spec with cage.

I wasn't fussed re CS package, but did want the leather option and buckets.

My original plan was to buy a Carrera T. I drove the T, GTS, and then a local dealer had a GT3 RS. While way over my original budget, I gladly spent 2x the money, because the GT cars are really that special. OF course to each his own, but the GT3/RS just have that emotion that few cars will ever have.

To put it another way, I would have had buyers remorse spending half the money on a T or GTS, but 0 so on a GT3 RS.

T looks great after 57,000 mls!

have you driven a 991.2 GT3?

Do your daily/weekend drives allow for some fun at higher speeds?

When projecting 991.2 GT3 into daily life, I'm always inclined to point out that the best of its personality is from 7-9k rpm. In the manual that means you're mid-70's mph at the top of 2nd.

The 4.0 doesn't suck below that, but if you spend a lot of time in your T's uprated, lower rpm power & torque, then you could miss that useful punch.

I live here in New Jersey and if I didnt have two little kids I would daily my GT3. Just keep in mind I am sure you know this, but while the ride in a GT3 is surprisingly tolerable, it will be louder in the cabin than your T. You will hear all sorts of mechanical noises from the intakes, motor, clutches, even a little diff thrown in there as well, and of course more road noise. It's all not excessive but its the sacrifice you can't get around.

Other than that I don't see other drawbacks to the plan. I wouldn't mod the stock exhaust though if it was me if it was a daily driver as it is still very loud at full song even in stock form, IIRC like close to 100 db.

Get the 18 ways for sure, get the Bose, get heated seats if you want, it will be perfectly comfortable if you choose the right spec and don't modify the exhaust too much.

From my view, the most underrated aspect of the .2 is the torque, it truly has very good low-to mid range power and builds speed to effortlessly and seamlessly. It's just eager to build speed between 3-5.5 it feels way stronger here than I anticipated. With the 9K redline I was expecting a car that was weaker in torque and only really moves in the very high RPM range but this is not the case at all. Coming from your T it of course won't have quite the same grunt but I don't think you'll miss it with how strong the GT3 already is, and of course upgrading the experience and capabilities in many other ways.

Do agree with this. And it also sounds amazing in the the lower rpm "torque" range. But every time I go for a drive without any party time rpm range, bummer.

do it - you wont regret it ... while the T is a good car, its a Zuffenhausen "parts bin" special ... the GT3 is a Weissach creation ...

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Really helpful!

Also feel free to throw in pics of your 991.2 GT3s. Colour-wise, I’d probably be up for any colour, except maybe black…

BTW I recommend you return your T to stock/OEM and resell the mods separately...

DSC is the cheapest/best suspension mod you can make ... installs in minutes ...

GT Silver. From my day of pick up over 4 years ago, pulled off the highway on the way home to soak it in. Far from becoming bored, my fondness & appreciation have grown.

I could daily my GT3 RS no problem, but I require the cayenne a lot of days for business reasons. If you really enjoy driving, the GT3 is a very special experience and IMO none of the other 911's beat it for the sheer thrill of driving enjoyment. Especially if you have uncongested roads in your routine. Personally, I would make that trade in a heartbeat.
