Lots of work and money, and this car just keeps looking worse. That's the Glasurit 801-72 primer on the rear hatch, which is interesting to work with.
It's definitely not the easiest or fastest product to work with. The longer you can wait for final prep, the better. It takes a few days until it can be sanded with any measure of success.
A long time ago, myself and a couple of other painter friends did our own undercoat study. Part of that effort involved cutting the same aluminum fender into three pieces. We compared 801-72 to two other competitor products. Each fender section was first stripped to bare aluminum. Then, for the product we were handling, we followed the manufacturer tech sheet to the tee.
A week later we came back to our test panels and beat them from the inside with a 4 lb. sledge hammer. Suffice it to say that the 801-72 was far and away the best of the three compared, and the best I have ever seen.
Some fun finds upon disassembly. Production number inside rear hatch, and hand written color code inside the mirrors
A fan of this project suggested I keep this mirror housing aside since it shows the production number, the paint code, and the original pearl paint inside it. I got ****lots*** of spare mirror housings and I think it's a great idea. Thanks Ryan!
How big of a PITA is it to remove the doors and get them installed and realigned again?
ive already had the hatch loosened and aligned better with the body. Didn’t seem that finicky.
The doors are extremely heavy when fully assembled, and remarkably light when stripped out. I stripped these bare on the car before removing, there's a LOT of parts in there. Life is better with a door jack.
All that work will pay dividends. I did so much of that type work in a former life that I can’t stand it anymore. I’m happy to be able to pay someone else to do it for me now.
