So, do we have a definate plan? Where to meet, etc ... I will be coming from the South, so I guess I will just meet most of you at the autoX. I have definately got to spend the next two nights in the garage. I want my 951 back in one piece! Anyone planning on entering the autoX?

I'm planning on entering. I'm tired of only getting three runs in at our local events.

Still planning on meeting in Raleigh, driving from DC.
Never AutoX'd a car before.
If I wanted to, what would I need to do to the car to get it up to spec? DO I need a rollcage? Not sure what the rules are.

About Meeting in Raleigh. I ebelive Matt Olde and myself are tentatively planning on meeting at around 9am or so. Not sure where. Matt would know as he lives a lot closer than I do.

Keep me updated (through posts on this thread). I am getting more and more excited to go!

All you need to autocross is your check book. You can borrow a helmet. The cars fall into different classes based on what you have done to them. But you can compete in a stock class. And your car has to be stock. I have never competed but I would be in A or B street prep because of the suspension mods.

I hope this helps.

All you have to do to compete is to bring the checkbook. Usually there are helmets available, or you could probably borrow one from one of us. Your battery must be secured, tires and balljoints must be ok. All interior loose items like the floormats have to come out along with anything under the seats. It's a major bummer to start braking hard and something slides up under the brake pedal. Leave the driver's side window down and hit the course. As for what to wear, dress for the weather, but you do have to wear at least sneakers to drive, no sandals. It's great fun, there's a good article in the latest Excellence about auto-x.

Okay thanks for the information.
So for a stock class the car has to be BONE stock?
Would a Throttle Cam, short shift and a 1st generation Autothority Chip set put me out of that class?
I'm sure since I've never done it before I will be towards the bottom of the rankings anyway, but I would like to do it for the experience.
The only thing I'd be concerned about would be wrecking my ride home! How dangerous is it? I know it's most likely a grouping of cones, but still, I would worry.
Any info?

Those mods will most likely bump you a class but I wouldn't sweat it. If this is your first event, just go out and drive in whatever class. The experience is invaluable. As for course problems, the parking lot at Eastland Mall is unobstructed with things like curbs. There are some light poles but the course is laid out so that you won't hit anything unless you try. As for hard on equipment? That's up to you. Can you shift well? Is your maintenance up to snuff? No bad tierod ends or balljoints? You should be fine. I've been auto-xing my stock 86 951 along with my son as an extra driver for 2x the runs on the car that everyone else had. No problems thus far. Read the Excellence article, it will explain alot.

Poor college student on a budget here. How much does the auto-X run?

Dave -
Thanks for all the information. Sounds like something I would like to do. And I would think that in the event that something did go wrong mechanically, I would be able to find someone there who might be willing/able to lend a hand (or a wrench).
Unfortunately, I do not get Excellence magazine and I have literally never seen it at any book store or anything. I assume this is a subscription only magazine? Where can I get a subscription? www.excellence.com does not exist, and neither does www.excellencemagazine.com

Thanks again for all the info, and thanks in advance for any more you will be throwing my way.

Paul

Typical entry fee is about $20, not too bad for unlimited runs. I'm not sure about this one, I'm going to find out though.

I always carry a tool set with me for the majority of problems. At least a minor one will not leave me stranded. If your car is ok enough for some spirited driving, it should be ok for the event. Just don't go dumping the clutch. Excellence is found at most bookstores, I get mine at Barnes & Noble. It's on the periodical section under transportation. I don't subscribe, just buy issues that interest me.

Auto-xes usually run $15 to 35... It gets boring after a while but it's extremely helpfull if you want to learn to control your car. The 24 hour event is the only one I will do, others are just not worth it unless you take this type of thing seriously.

Anyway, please keep me updated on any meetings around Raleigh. I know the area well, and don't live too far either. I just registered for the auto-x and will certainly be there.

Paul, Excellence has no web site. You can find it in the auto section at Barnes & Noble or Books-a-Million. It may take several trips, since they're not a true monthly (9 issues/yr.), and the stores only stock small numbers of copies.

Or the subscription address is: Excellence
Circulation Department
PO box 1529
Ross, CA
94957

$23 for one year (9 issues)
$40 for two years (18)
$56 for three years (27)

A note: the past couple of issues have had little or no 924/44/51/68 content. This is not usual, and hopefully doesn't represent a trend. There are, however, lots of relevant ads. The same situation seems to have developed with 911 & Porsche World.

Jim, with all issues of Excellence in the upstairs closet.. back to #1 when it wasn't called Excellence

I'd love to, but I won't have my Konis by then. My car is recently purchased and the struts have to be the originals. The car is way too soft to autocross

I might do a DE in October though. Hopefully I'll have new struts by then.

Alan-

I wouldn't worry about it. If you auto-x the way it is, you'll most likely have a better feel for the improvement that the Konis will make. Bring it on anyway, the more P-cars the better.
