Exactly how to put on and tension a timing belt today?

I'm in S.E Aurora and would love to finish getting the 951 running today.

Need to get the new belts on and tensioned. (And don lt have the tools)

Will be out working on it.

1986 951.

I've only had it a few weeks. Just put a new valve in the head, lifters and bought a timing belt kit.

I have most everything back together, just want to get it tensioned correctly and don't have the tools....yet.

I could probably do that.

Do you have the tensioning tools?

I have the belt on. Just need to set it, then do the balancer belt too. The rest I can do myself.

I have the tensioning tools, I just don't know my schedule for next weekend. if it can wait until then, I'm game.

its easy to do without tools. tighten it to what you think is tight enough, and then adjust tension so that with your thumb and forefinger you can twist the belt about 90 degrees but no more, and then maybe just a little bit tighter than that.

3 years and probably getting on 25000 miles with a belt like that

That's the way I do it (right at 90), and we checked the tension with Geoff's tools the last time and all is good.

Where are you twisting the belt? At the top side? Seems like the loosest part.
