The twist thing sounds easy. I don't seem to have a wrench thin enough to fit on the sproket while I tighten the other bolt.

Anyone have a set they would be willing to loan out for an evening? Or maybe just stop buy for 1/2 hour and help me finish up the tightening and install of the second belt?

I have time tonight, tomorrow afternoon or this weekend. Would love to get this car running and see what I have left to do to it. (just picked it up as a project and have not had it on the street yet)

I don't think I have the thin wrench. I have some wrench I managed to get to work a couple of times but I do not recall the details, I think it is an open end I took a grinder to and can only get a small part of the wrench opening on the eccentric when I am torquing it town. I also have a bicycle tool kit that has some thin wrenches but I am not sure the correct size is represented. it's 27mm or near to 1 1/8" so a cheap 1" thin wrench and a grinder would be one way to go.

Every time I do this I tell myself I'm going to buy or make the proper wrench for next time.

Haha....I already have a garage full of "custom tools" from Jeep, Audi, and motorcycle projects. This would be easier to find a thin wrench first before I go making yet another one use type of tool.

(You should see the contraption to hold the yoke on a 2008 Rubicon D44 axle to crush the crush sleeve during gear set up)

The twist method has been around way longer than a tensioning tool.

Okay, Damnit!!

I can't believe I forgot to check the water pump on this car before installing the belts.

WP is BAD!!

So I have a new wp sitting here, and half the car torn back down.

Seems I need to remove the rear timing belt cover, and all those damn pullies to get to it. Which I don't seem to have the right tools for it.

Can I talk someone that really knows how to do this into coming over with the right tools and helping me get this right. Balance shafts and all?

I have a custom set of wrenches u can use . They are 24 and 27 mm , offset , and thin sized for the belt tensioners . I don't have the magic tool . I do the twist then run , then adjust off till the whine jusssst goes away . I have a fresh motor on a stand at the shop , with the belt covers off if u wanna come take a look It . Some guys treat the t and b belts as if they were dismantling a nuclear warhead .

If anyone local DOES have the super uber magic tool , i would love to see it in action as i have a Gates Sonic Belt Tension Meter , and i would love to get a reading with it so I could get those # s out on the internet .

I bought a set of wrenches that work. Set everything up and forgot to check the condition of the water pump. When I got the car fired up and after a short drive I found the pump to be BAD. So now I need to take it all apart and do it again.

I also had a serious vibe in the shifter so want to make sure the balance shafts are right when it goes back together.

Have all the parts right now.

I have Bruce's 920X tool. it's not the factory, but it works beautifully, is easy to use, and accurate.

Vibe seemed to be all the time, but honestly I only got a few miles on the car before I figured out the WP issue. (DOH!).

I know I did not do the balance shafts right the first time. Only car I have ever worked on with them and simply did not even think about it.

Otherwise, I think if I could get this water pump on and the belts it may actually drive pretty nice.

cool. yeah, they vibe all the time if not properly timed, but ridiculous at 4500 RPM when 180 degrees off. both the gears for the balance shafts have an 'O' for Ober (over) and a 'U' for Unter (under). the upper one, should have the O through the round window, the lower should have the U through the round window.

"its a car, nuts and bolts, take it apart, put it back together."
