Rich, check out KLA industries, they make a 944 strut bar similar to the Weltmeister for about $140.

6-1-18 took it to work, ran a work errand, probably did 80 miles on Friday, highway and streets, ran excellent and cool despite the hot weather.

6-2-18 went to start it up in the morning, no luck. battery and starter tested good, bottom end is locked up. have pulled plugs and all belts, backed camshaft off a bit. no starter, not in gear.
pistons are all approximately at half travel.

turning directly on the crank gear (the BS pin wrench works for this too!) i get about 1/4" total "swing" before it jams on something internally with audible thunks.
it's so locked up internally that while trying to rock the crank back and forth, was able to break loose the crank bolt with a normal ~12" handle ratchet instead of the 4-ft jesus-bar.

thinking spun rod bearing, that didn't show the day before because it was already running and oil was warm, but once cold and no horsepower being applied, no more go.
sump was full (had topped it off on 5/31, and draining yesterday got a solid 6+ quarts) of Castrol 20W50.

evaluating options now...this may be the divine sign i've been waiting for.

That sucks. Any warning signs in retrospect?

What's the option you've been waiting on a divine sign for?

No warnings at all.
Was running great doing errands, pulled fine up to 85mph or so, no problems getting around town.
Didn't suspect a thing was wrong as I parked in the garage Friday night. No noises, temp was fine, OP was fine.

To the 2nd question...boosted 16-valve.
Everything is on hand, some assembly required, may as well just do it at this point.

^^ If you have the stuff, do it. It is what finally got me into building my 5.0 "euro" hybrid for my 81 928. Just the process of collecting the bits over the years until you can finally go all in.

On the 87 944 I did a rear brake job which meant rebuilding the calipers, newish pads (from my 928 before I stuck on 993 calipers), new e-brake shoes and adjusted them.

I also cleaned who knows how much gunk off of the hubs and rear suspension. Much cleaner now.

I reused the rotors as they measured within spec ~19.5mm and were genuine Porsche. I just put a light coating of brake grease on the hub so they wouldn't re-adhere themselves together

Now to tackle the fronts...

Blake,
928S3 head with 944S cams going onto either a 944S or 944T short block...

V2- Sorry to hear about that, Spencer...Time for a quick look see..metal in the oil? How many miles? Sure you don't want to go all out and put in an LS3? sounds like it would be about the same $$ even with all the adapter kits.. and less headaches down the line after the install..??? Just a thought..Could the cam timing belt just let go when you shut it off? That way the pistons might have contacted a valve when you were turning it over by hand. Have you pulled the plugs to check for a hydrostatic lock? If a cylinder filled with water overnight it won't turn over at all until you relieve the pressure. An engine that does this will give no warning..ask me how I know...

i rebuilt this engine in 2006, maybe 60-70k miles since then.

rich, belts are intact, cylinders are all dry. i took the belts off entirely and its definitely the bottom end locked up somehow. either jammed crank, or maybe a dropped valve? major disassembly required when i have time.

LS swap...hard to do it "right" and still be California smog legal. smog tech won't blink at a 4-cyl engine whose cam cover says PORSCHE across it...but a V8 with GM badges would be hard to hide
not to mention my whole 16v adventure will cost me less than just the basic V8 "install kit" parts.
plus then ive gotta find a decent LS type engine (harder than you'd think), for a decent price (MUCH harder than you'd think).
ive driven a few LS swapped 944 cars, while fast there are so many other compromises (at least in those examples) that it takes a lot of the fun out of the car, IMO.

That sounds really cool. Why a 928 S3 head over any of the other 16v options though? Doesn't the S/S2 head already have big potential out of the box?

Hack sawed a crappy combination wrench in half and used it to attach my new (used) cast iron exhaust headers.
