Replaced the rear wheel bearings on my '86 over the weekend. Not too bad a of a job, with the right tools.

Took about five hours start to finish. Passengers side bearing was in really bad shape. Should have changed them years ago.

Default stereo upgrade phase 2 complete!

Just completed phase 2 of my stereo upgrade. Previously replaced front L & R speakers with Alpines. Now installed Kenwood head unit and compact subwoofer. Placed subwoofer behind the driver's set. All went well after I figured out which wire went where (since a prior owner installed a FM/cassette head unit previously). Sound is GREAT! Phase 3 will be replacing the rear two speakers.

Did you have the special Arnworks rear bearing tool?

Hard to believe probably, but I have exactly the same head unit installed in my S2. I didn't install it, it was put in by the PO.

Nope. Bought the front wheel bearing set from harbor freight. Worked great.. don't use an impact gun on them and it's fine. I used a long handle 1/2" drive ratchet and impact socket to pull the bearings out and press them back in with the adapter set.

Also used a 5lb slide hammer to get the hubs off and a bearing separator to remove the race from the hub.

I considered the Arnnworx tool, but for the same price I could do just about any other size bearings on other vehicles, instead of just the 944. I'm sure the Arnnworx tool is really nice considering the quality of his timing belt tools. But the HF set worked great.

[X-post from "What have you done to your 944 S2 Cabriolet"]

I replaced the original exhaust with a stainless steel Dansk 92.442S (3rd on the right):

Then I also replaced the cat with a custom resonator designed by me and built in stainless steel:

This is the original cat that was removed:

This is the final result:

And this is the sound (recorded with a smartphone):

Overall I'm very satisfied, the sound is full but no drone while cruising

Hit a little over 1,000 miles on new timing and balance shaft belts so I checked the tension. Both came out in spec, so I double checked them and had the same result.

Buttoned things back up and called it good.

Easiest re-tension I've done yet.

It's been a very hot summer in Raleigh, so the old girl has stayed in the air conditioned garage for many months. We're getting a cold snap tonight so brought her out for a wash in preparation for some driving later this week.

installed the new balancer belt and roller, checked all bolts 3x...

then the fan blower cover. old one had holes and tended to leak into the car.

got the car out on the road again 10 pm last night. motor runs great, however, now it's time to tackle the suspension. i was coasting all over the place.

already have the yellow konis, front bushings, looking for the best options for the rear now.

will check tension on the belts again tonight and install the covers, finish up the front...

drove it to work this morning. talk about motivation!!!

cheers!

Still doing basic maintenance/refresh stuff ... today I put in new coil, distributor cap, rotor, rotor dust cap (was missing), distributor cap gasket (ditto), wires, and plugs. Also need to get a coil cover (missing) ... looks like a $10 eBay item.

The car now starts almost immediately after sitting for a week, as opposed to five-second cranking of the past. Still on the list are sketchy brakes (will do new lines and a flush, then go from there), oil change, coolant flush, new radiator & heater hoses, replacing tail light lenses, shift lever replacement, buttoning up some interior pieces, and chasing down some electrical foolishness.

BTW, who thought that was such a great place to put the coil? Sheesh.

Replaced the center gauge pod in my 1983. Clock mounting hole has been broken for many years so I finally dug out the replacement parts I've had for this job. Clock still works accurately but the bulb was burned out. Went to AutoZone for a replacement bulb and they were absolutely no help. Broke my own rule of "thou shalt know the part number of that which you seek before proceeding to the parts store". I will get the correct bulbs today and button her back up tonight.

Got her wrapped up in mover's blankets and a car cover for hurricane Harvey this weekend. Parked at family's house in a nearby suburb, which has better drainage and is on higher ground. Fingers crossed.
