I’m starting to save these threads in a folder called “odd sounds that are normal that you think are impending doom but don’t worry about it noob”. I might amend it to to add smells too, we’ll see how that goes.

Same. But some new sound I got is the fan goes really loud (on the RHS) when you have your foot on the accel. Lift off it goes away. I did not notice this before.

Original poster and commentators,

Is this the noise you are talking about?
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/47m7nxnsb...oY730bQHa?dl=0

This noise absolutely kills me- I despise the noise and I think it is extremely unbecoming of any expensive car let alone of a top German brand.

I hear it driving though the neighborhood, through parking lots, and at urban speed. It clunks faster and faster according to engine speed. This is NOT your usual Porsche valve tick or GT3 tin-can sound.

In my history, I have ordered 2 naturally aspirated 911s (2015 and 2016 GTS, one manual one PDK) and one naturally aspirated 2016 Spyder brand new prior to ordering this car in addition to having owned countless other cars including used Porsches (2018 GT3 Touring, etc). Never heard anything like this.

At a stoplight, this noise usually occurs but it does have a mind of its own- will go off an on- Morse code, as someone said 😂 To me it sounds like flywheel chatter (I don’t know). What do we think it is? Why is the noise a bit random?

The dealer said the Porsche engineer said the sound is normal, they couldn’t tell me what it was, and they wouldn’t help beyond that.

Guys,

This is an interesting thread for sure on all the different sounds that come with the GT4 with the engine being within inches of the driver's seat.

No, this is a thread about abnormal sounds which are of concern to owners, not normal sounds which simply become more prominent when the engine is inches away.

yup that's the sound ... reminds me of black cabs in London ... tacka tacka tacka tacka ...

its apparently the fuel injectors ... its not any flywheel chatter that I have heard (and that is usually only on a single mass l/w flywheel)

Wow. Thanks for confirming. The sound is embarrassing. I’m actually embarrassed to drive in the neighborhood with this racket. If I wanted a car that sounds like it’s broken I would buy a Folger’s coffee can ricemobile.

Porsche needs to fix this problem. Injectors don’t make that noise on any other car on the planet, and I don’t imagine some wonderful engineering design specific to this engine which would necessitate that noise.

I agree its unpleasant, but I doubt that Porsche will rectify this - unless the function of the injectors is compromised ...

I'm installing a new (Akrapovic) exhaust that *might* muffle it!

Aww come on, it's not that bad, it doesn't bother me at all, IMHO you are fixating on the noise... Your comparison of this engine to the others is not valid because IIRC they did not use the same style of injectors, the injectors in the 9A2 engine are piezo electric and that is they sound they make.

It is normal for the injector sound to vary as the RPM and load changes determines the number of times they fire during any particular stroke.

Regarding the bolded, the injectors are not broken so won't be fixed...

Wow, " Folger’s coffee can ricemobile",really?

It would be cumbersome for me to list the many millions of dollars worth of European cars I have owned but I am experienced enough to know that NO OTHER CAR besides maybe recent GT variants of Porsche cars has a sound like this. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... to me, this is a beautiful car with a terrible mechanical sound that is unbecoming of its $100k price. Sounds like a diesel engine when it is making that clunking noise.

As for the " list the many millions of dollars worth of European cars I have owned..." mostly irrelevant to the conversation... but

If it bothers you so, perhaps you purchased the wrong car then, and by your assertation easily have the money to move on.

How many of those had normally aspirated flat 6 motors, that have to deal with the new EU pollution regulations?

It's relevant insofar as it indicates my broad experience. Suggesting I move on is a simplistic statement because you don't know me. I love Porsche, I am a Porschephile, and I do not believe in simply discarding fine art. I ordered this car. I like this car. I want this car. I love the way it looks, feels, and sounds. Yes, I love the engine sound -- it's wonderful. But I do not like the ridiculous clunking noise which has a mind of its own. I would prefer the issue to be acknowledged and addressed by Porsche. I like this flat 4.0L, and to me there is no reason why only this engine should exhibit that kind of noise in the context of zero other cars having it and industry-wide engineering feats over the last 20 years.

If a larger proportion of people complained to Porsche about this, we could have a chance at getting something done. Comments from folks who either don't have a dog in the fight or who simply say "boo hoo to you" do not assist in that effort in any way.

Side note: I ordered new a brand new 2015 Mercedes C-Class with a similar engine noise (new engine for Mercedes at the time, as this was the first model year of a brand new generation of car), and Mercedes not only acknowledged the problem and changed production to address it; Mercedes bought the car back from me and offered me any other car in inventory or the opportunity to order a new one.
