@Charles Navarro Thanks for joining the discussion and sharing some key information about not only viscosity and cold starts but also engine wear and environment effects on oil in the engine.

what are your thoughts of running mobil 1 5w-50. in the 992 gt3?

in the prior gen gt3/rs cars there were quite a few recommendation for track cars to run the m1 5w-50 oil.

thx

There can't be any functional difference in the engine that would require a 0w40 over a 5w40.

If concerned about your warranty, I would recommend cutting oil change intervals in half and once the warranty is up, there will for sure be plenty of choices for a 5w40 C40/VW 511 oil or you could run Driven's DI40, which is their equivalent. That's what I personally run in my direct injected vehicles.

Is a 5w50 viscosity approved for the 992 GT3? If so, I don't see that causing any problem, however M1 5w50 tends to shear out of grade very fast, however it's still going to be much better than M1 0w40, that's for sure! Just change the oil more often. If tracking the car, I'd change the oil before and after every track event. However, I'd prefer to run a better oil like Driven, especially a race oil for the track, but that's what I prefer to do.

No.

Some better brand like Driven would be great, but M1 0W40 is the only approved oil (C40 0W40 both required)

My dealer is telling me they use A40 spec; is C40 for Europe?
I thought that was interesting, given the manual explicitly requires C40 spec. Are all dealers in the US use the A40 spec?

OK, we can forgive for not reading over 500 posts on the subject...

You already have the correct answer from the owners manual, C40 is the specification required, your dealer is wrong to put in A40.

FWIW, C40 is for all 4.0l engines in the 718 and that is world wide.

Some dealers have resorted to using A40 oil, due to the difficulty in sourcing the only oil that is both 0W40 and C40 rated (Mobil One ESP X3), required for the last couple model years. C40 is worldwide spec.

If a dealer puts in an A40 oil, be sure they note it on the workorder, so if you have a problem, you can CYA. The reason for needing a C40 oil is the whole LSPI issue with the calcium detergents used in the A40 oil.

The 2020 owners manual lists 5w40 as warranty approved... unless Porsche has officially rescinded that approval. This opens op a number of other oils, Motul and Liqui Moly to name a couple.

@gr8ful4flat6 What year is your car?

Maybe it changed for 2021. My 2022 is explicit about 0W40 C40…

2022 and you’re correct, the manual only says 0w40 C40

Yes, they changed it... maybe Mobil complained?

Weird as it seems, I think they can record slightly better fuel economy numbers with 0W40. Pretty sure there is no other reason…

Thank you everyone!
I am trying to buy the oil and have the dealer/shop change it. Mobile 1 is a bit scarce, and it looks like Motul doesn’t have 0w40 C40 spec? I only see Motul 5w40 in C40.

Correct, Mobil 1 has an exclusive in C40 in the 0W40 weight. I have been able to find the ESP X3 stuff (the one you want) at some Autozone stores (they have messed up the inventory system, so checking electronically is not reliable).
