New! 9m93 Speedster widebody - full build in detail
#61
Exactly as Steven says - in effect we could cut the car in half or quarters or eighths - but there would be no movement.
Because the A posts will be changed for the Speedsters, and other intrusive work on the cills by fabricating whilst on a jig we can ensure that the whole car will remain straight and true - it's the 'right/only way' to do it!

That's right. Building any car on a Celette will ensure the finished chassis is factory perfect. We also build all of the 9mRS conversions on the jig when welding in the cage and fitting the roof for the same reason. Besides which, it's always better to find out before the car is built whether the chassis is straight or not!
The more observant may also have noted that we are now on step 3 of the correct procedure for this kind of side repair/rebuild work:
1. Fit Speedster door to A-Post and adjust to original quarter panel
2. Leave door untouched and replace quarter panel, B-Post, kidney bowl & sill.
3. Check for perfect fit of door when welded.
4. Remove door & replace A-Post, tack in place.
5. Fit door, check alignment to quarter panel.
6. Fit wing, check alignment to door.
7. Remove door & wing and fully weld A-post & scuttle panel.
And finally it's 9m Marc who is the guru doing all the work on this project, not me - I'm only responsible for designing engine parts, tuning Motec systems and telling you all what we are up to!

Nothing too dramatic to report this week! Some additional Speedster metalwork has been ordered from Porsche, which has arrived. Lots of 'hidden' fabrication work being done at the moment - this project aint a DIY back street jobbie for sure!!!
In the meantime I've been sourcing other bits and pieces, such as a Carbon fibre strut brace, KW adjustable suspension, seat belts rewebbed in Blue! The Turbo Twists are back having been acid dipped and expoxy base coated. One wheel has been 'test' painted for approval!
Looks pretty cool!

Should have mentioned that work slowed up somewhat due to staff shortages, so Marc has had no alternative but to put down his welding overalls and don his paint suit to get some of the backlog of painting out of the way. We're now actively looking for a new painter/prepper to work fulltime on these projects, so any interested parties should get in touch with our office.

The latest update - the guys (or specifically Marc) over at 9M have been really busy over the past couple of weeks, and have now grafted in all the new internal metalwork in the rear tub.
This then was followed by final fitting of the Turbo rear quarters (and new 'kidney bowls')
I'd been across to Warrington a couple of times over the past few weeks, but thought I'd treat my wife and daughters to a run out on Saturday and show them the car! Dead impressed!!! - Well maybe not! Women hey!
So this weeks offering!
Can ya tell what it is yet?
Looks a bit fat (No not you dear!)
Also there was some debate regarding the badging (and the registration document, which the authorities now have for a model change)
The car was a Carrera Cabrio - so if it just went 'wide' it would be a Carrera S Cabrio, now that it's going 'wide' and Speedster - should it be Speedster S ?
Someone (!) just happened to have spare 'S' - and the new 2S grilles have been painted titanium (as have the door handles and mirrors) - so the idea is -
This week the attentions will move up the car to the forward bulkhead and this pile of metalwork will merge into the car
All the genuine Speedster stuff direct from Stuttgart manufactured back in 1994 when they anticipated making 3000 964 cars, instead of the 936 that they actually made.
To be continued........ Graham

"Speedster S" badging example
Hopefully helpful real-life badging, from the "Speedster type 993 photo thread"...
