New! 9m93 Speedster widebody - full build in detail

Title says it all really. We have all the necessary Speedster parts in the shop and the customer is delivering his newly aquired 60,000mile 993VR Tiptronic convertible on Monday for us to start work on converting it into a turbo-bodied 9m93 Speedster.

We intend to do a full body restoration on the car, so included in the work will be an absolute & complete strip down to bare shell, structural Speedster conversion of the window frame & roof mounting points, turbo rear quarters fitted followed by the shell being dipped & E-coated in the same manner as the 9m93RS conversions.

I'll be taking lots of photos as we go along, so you best all get ready for some more wintertime car porn from the 9m skunkworks!

W O W - Can't wait to see it take shape. Thanks!

Bring it on. :)

Recession? :-)

That will be fun to watch, thanks!

this is gonna be cool.

Are you using factory Speedster doors? I understand there is a shop that is specializing in modifying standard doors into Speedster doors as a more cost effective solution.

A 4 liter 9M motor in a stripped down lightweight Speedster would be sweet!

(subscribing to thread :) )

Now this should keep us entertained over the coming winter. Please tell me the "Tip" part will be deleted for this project.

Don't get too excited guys, this is not going to be a road rocket, the project is being done on a tightly controlled budget and with limited upgrades and is all about having a beautiful looking convertible for the summer. We already have a pair of original Speedster doors and every other part that we need, so there are no problems with parts supply. The customer is also planning to keep the Tip because he is having knee joint problems and will struggle to use a clutched transmission, although we are giving consideration to fitting a 996TT or 997TT tiptronic at a later date.

Those of you who are hoping to witness the build of the ultimate Speedster are obviously going to be disappointed, however don't dispair as we all you need to do is keep an eye on the 964 forum because we are also finishing off an extensive conversion on a genuine 964 Speedster over the winter. The specification of this car is probably going to include a 500hp supercharged 3.8 litre 8200rpm engine on Motec (with knock control), 6 speed 993RS gearbox & LSD, carbon twin plate clutch, carbon ceramic brakes, 4 channel ABS, KW suspension, Dymag carbon/mag wheels and lots of other goodies besides. Now that one will definitely be a streetfighter (in disguise) .....

Keeping busy Colin? I look forward to tracking both projects, they both sound great!

Busy? We will be come Monday.

Strange mix of work at the moment, seems that all the projects are bodyshop biased. Some of the more interesting projects currently in progress are:

Full restoration of 1979 930 Martini - shell now in paint
Full restoration of 1970 911T - long termer nearing completion, total 100 point resto of body, interior & all mechanicals
9m93 "RS touring" conversion from stock 993C2
993 engine rebuild with Supercharger + Motec for Ultima race car
9m 3.82 blown engine for 964 Speedster (most other work already done)
911SC partial bodywork restoration (rear quarter, sill & wings)
BMW E36 M3 race car build (full cage, minor resto; dip, strip & repaint; Recaros etc.) for a friend of Marc's

yet to be confirmed:
9m64RS Clubsport with 3.82 race engine & Motec in Mint Green.

and for ourselves:
RHD 996GT3 conversion to roadgoing RSR/Cup specification
9m64RS touring "demonstrator" (excuse for me to have a daft road car!)

Colin-- Thanks, you made my day! Will be fun to watch, & especially to see her beauty makeover. What color? Regardless, color me excited to see 993 widebody Speedster curves.

What guy doesn't get excited by good-looking curves in time for beach season? (I could probably work in a 'topless' reference if I tried.)

Someone recently mentioned your shop to me. Although I have no personal experience with your business, I said I had a good impression of your work. Come Monday, 9m may be my new favorite.

I've gotta figure how to set my alarm clock to this thread, so I can wake every morning to it... Will you have a constant video feed? Addicts need to know ;)

PS Graham-- You have a PM (hope you got my previous one, too).

It's going to be a shade of blue mica (pearl) that's somewhere in between horizon blue and cobalt.

Love the long hood look on the 3.2 Speedster, I've been thinking about doing one of those as well for a long time now...

David in LA 09-20-2009 11:00 PM

So it's been 3 days now...is it done yet?!?! :)
