This is why you're unlikely to see any educated sellers selling premium cars on that site. It brings out all the Craigslist-type buyers, this is unlikely to change anytime soon unless they clean up that site.
I disagree also. Not so sure what you mean by 'educated sellers selling premium cars" as all you have to do is look on a daily basis and you see premium cars being sold. BaT started out with the trash and has since moved to what it is today. With educated buyers and sellers. So, with all your uppity comments about it, why on earth would you want to list your cars there?

I think thicker skin would make life much more tolerable for some in this world.

I'm going to see the black '89 in Saratoga tomorrow morning (Jul 2). Not sure if I'm interested in it for myself, but I'm calling dibs!

I like a straightforward transaction, me and the seller, in the seller's driveway. This is none of those things. It's not even in the agent's driveway. Caution advised.

I had an appointment for tomorrow at 9 am to see it. But my partner in crime and I have decided to pass on it. Lets see the story we got goes as follows.
I am selling the car for my Friend who is a Doctor.
He acquired the car from a Patient of his who owed him money.
Can you email me a copy of the Tittle?
Sorry the Tittle is in the Attorneys office, but I will see if I can get it.
The car passed NY Inspection and Emissions.
Everything works I drove it on the Northway doing 70 miles an hour.
We put a new fuel pump in it.
We installed a new wiring harness in it for the rear lights.
We changed the oil.
Anyway who knows it might be a good buy, but its not going to be our Huckleberry.
We have others we need to finish.
Let us know how you make out tomorrow.
Good Luck, as you stated beware.

Re: the black '89 in Saratoga

The agent is consistent, then. I'll try to sort out the car and the title.

John: did you make it to the Town Hall for Camp 928? I noticed a car imported from Detroit. If so, sorry I didn't get to meet you. You may have met Andrew and Fiona with their 911 (plates: "911FIFTY") - Andrew spotted the subject 928 two blocks from his house while walking his dog and called me. He'll be on the scene this morning.

Big red flags! Porsche for oxy scripts? I hope not. Probably doing home visits for an elderly patient who no longer can afford them but insisted on paying the doc. Hope so.

Keep us informed!

Hi Curt,
Yes came up with The Blue Dodge Challenger Shaker, hooked up with the guys at the restaurant right before the car show and followed them up on a spirited fun run to the show. Was at the show for about two hours. Sorry we missed each other. I had to run back to the Catskills to enjoy the Mountain Jam Concert being held at Hunter Mountain. Will give you a shout out next time I am up in your area.
Let us know how you make out with the Saratoga Shark.
Best Regards John

I'm still a neophyte at 928s, so keep that in mind as you read this report on the Saratoga '89.

I think everything is legit, so far as the title is concerned. The guy selling it for his doctor friend is alright. The doctor did not get the car through a lawsuit - the patient offered it up. The guy has seen the title, and it's in the doctor's name.

The car drove pretty well. Engine strong, shifted nicely. The steering felt a little odd to me - reluctant to turn in, something like that - alignment? The brakes showed signs of having sat for awhile. No mechanical faults otherwise, felt or seen. I looked in the vent hole for the timing belt. The passenger side was steady, though close to the forward edge of the gear. The driver side wandered a small amount. I could see the label pass by - does that mean it's not ancient? Assume there are no records for this car.

Exhaust looked ok, but was kinda rumbly. Some might like it this way.

Spoiler, front and rear belly pans were all there and intact. On the other hand, no jump post cover! No oily mess anywhere that I could see (didn't jack up the car, so underneath was not examined much if at all).

Cruise control worked! Dash instruments all inop except voltmeter. The guy said they were working until he took it to the shop for the fuel pump. The shop he took it to is a good shop (R&D in Albany).

Quite a few cracks in the dashboard. Not chasms, just cracks. One in the pod. Seats are that nasty orange, with dark creases, and some moderate distress at the critical sliding-*** location. Carpet reasonable.

Wheels might clean up with scotchbrite. No streaks. Tires have rubber, but didn't check the date code.

Pretty sure it's a repaint. Buffing might get it nice, but it seems a little uneven. Some crazing on the sunroof. Some trim pieces missing around windows. Wing has a rough surface in places; don't know if these can be sanded smooth. Wiper is missing.

Front and rear bumpers have been kissed enough to show crazing.

AC is inop.

Summary: cosmetics not great, not horrible, some guys might be fine with it given the price. Mechanically, TB/WP is almost certainly needed, and the other standard procedures would be desireable. A good project car for someone who'd be happy to do that work. Not a good car to bring up to show quality, but decent.

Assuming the thrust bearing is OK, the car is worth $8K.

Didn't fall in love with it, myself, and I have other projects. I release my dibs! The guy said he's had 12 calls on it.

I have photos I'll process later, if there's interest.

Curt,
Very nice trip report, you covered everything (except stock vs. bling Radio! haha) that most would want to hear before they offer the patients, doctors, friends agent $6,500(rather than $8,000) and then invest in a PPI before you do the deal. Hey Nate, I'm just taking some pressure of you (look I suggested the car is not worth asking price!) in case someone involved in the 5th party sale (patients/Doctors, friends/agent) happens to be listening. Nate, personally I enjoy your observations. In fact, I reached out to you by PM this January and we corresponded by e-mail and PM on which of the two 91 GT's to buy, so imo, you are an expert.

Yep, That's Chuck Schreiber's GTS...host of 3rd Coast. Beautiful GTS and very well maintained by SeanR. A few pics of Chuck's GTS from the 2012 OCIC, Wichita, KS. T
