^^

if you want to shave laptimes - buy the 200k$ 570s.
if you drive for excitement - keep the GT3.

Not to say McLarens are unreliable, but this is not the same thing, not even in the same scale. Being stranded and having to flatbed the car twice within few month ruins plans and trust in the car in general. Imagine trailering it to a track across the country and getting check engine light on the first session of a multi-day track outing. I'd pay 25%-40% more for a car that does not do that.

Now let's look at the GT3 - my '14 has 19K miles, ~30 track days, 3.5 years and not a single limp mode or check engine light, no track days missed or ended early, never stranded. The precautionary engine replacement came with a loaner and a rather generous reimbursement, and many tracked their loaners without a peep from Porsche. Yes, some may have gotten the inconvenience of the second engine replacement, but it's a small number so far.

This guy probably wasn't too happy being stranded, although I don't think he was waiting for a flatbed 😉

I loved my GT3 btw and never had a problem with it. Never owned a Mclaren but I hope to some day.

Having owned numerous Ferraris, Lamborghini and Mclaren, what most people on this forum have ignored is the cost of ownership. Yes, it is a great deal to buying an used 650S at the moment. The performance of the car is great and you get so much more with the Mclaren compared to the GT3. BUT, you are also jumping into a different class of cars as well.

Whether its the 650S or the 570S, it is going to cost you almost double to triple in annual service (depending if its the major or minor service). Once the car is out of warranty, that's where the $$$ starts to flow out. You can always opt to get the extended warranty, but that will cost you $$$ as well. Let me give you a simple example. The windshield on a 911/GT3 is about $1000. How about on a Mclaren 650S? $4500. The windshield on a 458 Speciale is $5000.

If you have owned a Ferrari or Lamborghini in the past, then the cost of owning a Mclaren shouldn't shock you as much. Mclaren still costs more to maintain, due to the amount of tech it has over the Lambo/Ferrari. But I'm afraid with most people on this board, they will be in for a huge surprise coming from the 911/GT3 level.

My 2 yr service on my 2015 gt3 was $2200 and the 1 yr service was $400. The annual service on a 570 S in so cal is $1500. Looks like the service is similar in price.

Uh, GT3 first year service is $400 vs. $1500 for the 570S. That is almost a 400% difference.

The 2 year service on my 12C (now gone) was about $3400. I expect the similar pricing for the 570S, which is 50% more than the GT3.

Lots of people on RL do their own DIY oil changes and service on gt3s. How is it with the Maclaren?

My recent 2 year/12,000 mile service on my 15 GT3 was $1300.
Your dealer overcharged you.

Every time I think about buying a 488, this is what brings me back down to earth. I just can't stomach spending so much just to keep an already overpriced car on the road.

Ferraris have 7 year free maintenance, so $0.. much cheaper than a porsche if you can swing the Msrp and the depreciation. Also.. (just my 2c)... don't buy a 488.. it's just not the exciting car they make it out to be. Find a "slower" 458 used and rev the ***** off of it, or if you want turbo get a mclaren, which is a car with a chassis to actually match the engine.

And that's my point. So many people talking about getting fed up with their Porsche dealer (eg. paying over sticker, getting on a long list) and want to switch to the Mclaren camp, none of them realize how cheap it is to run a Porsche.

The inconvenient truth is that GT3 is about two tiers BELOW the Mclaren cars, both in terms of MSRP and the cost of ownership. First year service is $400 vs $1300-1500, second year service is $1200-1400 vs. $3200-3500 and this goes on. Parts takes much longer order for Mclaren, especially coming from the UK. True, Mclaren do stock parts at the dealership level, but they usually have one set of each. So if you and another car need the same part at the same time, one of you will need to wait a long time. This is not to mention Mclaren's reliability is nowhere close to Porsche. Same thing goes for Ferrari.

People cut Ferrari a lot of slack because it's Ferrari, and they are built by Italians. Poor fit and finish, check. Bad paint job, of course! Passion and flare, lots of it!

Interesting as I feel like the fit and finish on modern Ferrari is one of the strong points.

See, the seduction of "Ferrari", even you are cutting them a lot of slack!
