Yes, enough to come out. It happened the day before when we worked on the car together. And it can happen with stock injectors.

100% true.

Nothing locates the injector in the manifold bore except the clip.

Without the clip, or with it not properly fastened, the fuel pressue will push the injector out of the rail.

it can fall that far? then again i jus know the L-jet runners have a ledge the injector sits on. might be different for S3.

Yes it was me.

The the injector doesn't "bottom out" in the intake the hole where it is inserted is the the same size all the way through. Even with the rail bolted down, the injector can wiggle down enough to allow the top seal to come out. Having the clips in properly is absolutely critical, and I found out the hard way. My clip was upside down.

The only way to work on the injectors is remove the rail as a whole, and clip/unclip them all on the bench and reinstall all four together.

What is the likelihood that when the injector got tapped "to wake it up" the injector got pushed out of the rail and the clip too?

All of the skinny, lightweight Bosch injectors I tried (when the older style became difficult to obtain) had the groove for the clip in the improper location, allowing the injector to pop out of the rail.

I machined a correct groove in several sets of these injectors, before locating a source for the "proper" injector design.

Might be worth looking at....

I think you nailed it. These were the skinny replacement coral colored injectors and the groove was a bitch

The car is covered up and sitting in front of my house...The sunroof is open which I can manually close
but the drivers window is open, I concerned about hooking up the battery to get the window closed
Any suggestions?

Whoa there.....

The best oprion is to not allow the car to be "totalled" at all, but make the insurance company fix the car.

The offer of 11K is absurd. Keep in mind that an 86.5 just sold for 52K and that car wasn't ant nicer than this one (I worked extensively on both)...and didn't have 20K+ in "restoration" invoices.

The adjuster's job is to offer as low an amount as he possibly can....to reduce the company's loss!

Go back and tell him to find you a 86.5 in your condition for 11K and buy it for you to replace this one.

The story will quickly change!

Also might help is several of you with 1985-86 cars put them up for sale on craigslist asking BIG money....costs you nothing BUT a bit of time just do not put in a phone # unless you really wish to sell

Drop the console side and power the window motor up at the switch is likely easiest. Or hook the battery up but disconnect the engine Harness from the ce and pull the fuel relay.
