The only thing I have done to it is remove the hood because it was so difficult to raise and of course the struts are gone and I replaced the tire with a used tire so I can move it and I tossed the fan shroud so I could get a better look at the front of the motor. I like Jerry's idea

Van, when my '82 was rear-ended back in 2001 the repair estimate was $21,322.09.
Allstate tried to low-ball me with "comparables" gleaned from LCD sources such as the AutoTrader. I asked for an independent appraisal, made the car look as good as possible, and supplied the appraiser with information re: sales of cars in similar condition. Allstate ended up paying me $700 more than I'd paid for the car 7 years earlier - and paid for the appraisal.
Buy back was ~$1,800. Sourcing all the parts by myself and doing as much of the work that I could (disassembly and reassembly), I had about $8,000 into '82 the by the time it was back on the road with a salvage title.

That totally blows. I couldn't imagine going through one of my beloved cars going up in flames.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Hope it works out for you.
Wouldn't the engine in this car be damaged from the heat of the fire? I was thinking it could possible warp the block? Just curious...

Sorry about your loss. I'm glad no one was hurt.
The engine pictures on yours actually look better than mine did, although you have more body damage.
They can be fixed,
Cosmo

Mine
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-infected.html
The problem is that you have to be willing to do the work yourself and your time has to be worth less than $4 an hour. I figure I had about 300 hours by time I was done.
Certainly mine came out of the repairs in fine form as it was immediately driven across the country and back.
There may be options for something other than a salvage title. Depends on the jurisdiction laws, I don't know if Cosmo ended up with a salvage title, but mine didn't.
Insurance laws are different in every province in Canada, and I'm guessing can be different in the US. In Canada the only sure things are salvage for frame damage exceeding value of car, non rebuildable for flood. Things like fire and hail are far more variable.
You may have the option of a cash settlement for damage, I don't know, but it may be worth talking to someone who does.
Good luck with the resolution.

I keep weighing back and forth of repairing it. The hardest part at the moment is that it's so ugly an nasty.
I'm **** when it comes to clean cars and engine bays. Just taking this thing apart will be messy and dirty. Lots of mask and gloves.
All of the advice from everyone in the forum is been wonderful. James nailed it with getting an outside person to inspect it for the valuation. This is why he is a lawyer and i'm not. I am not at all effected by the salvage title.
Once everything is settled by the insurance company and if I do keep it, I would take the engine out and bring to GB to freshen up and inspect. Meanwhile I would take everything out and take it to the best body shop around and start from that point. But tomorrow is a new day. Now to get fair value.
If I do keep it and do the work, I will document every step the journey.

Actually you are effected in the unlikely event that you have any future misfortune (like some drunk slams into the car) and you must deal with an insurance company over the value of the car. The moment they determine that it has a salvage title they will discount their NORMAL value. So $11,000 becomes something less.

A 'declared value' policy will avoid future problems. You and the insurance get together and justify a specific value for the asset. It's insured up to that value and they set the premium. Not common for a 928, but it could prolly be done. Hagerty's does this all the time with high value vehicles. Most of these come with yearly mileage driven limits.

I'm halfway into a pitcher of mojito's, so please take that into account. I think I'd have to ask myself, "at what point would I tap out?" Transmission? TBF?? If the answer is, I'd keep her no matter what, then restore it. If not, cut bait, get over the initial shock, and move on. Again, sorry for your loss. Personally, I'd sell it to Mark so others could live, buy a hellcat, and never look back. But that's drunk me...

If it goes for parts, Mark is first in line, not to worry as we already had a conversation.
IF I do end up getting a decent settlement then I will be in the market for another and most likely as low a mileage S4 as i can find within reason. Might even settle for a Roger box.

No not a lawyer just an actor Was a juror on a TV show. And a homeless guy in the court room on another.
And be sure that an special insurance policy is "agreed value" since many major companies write "stated value" which seems like it would work BUT big BUT all that stated value does is set your premium !!! They have the option to payout "stated value" or ACV which ever is LOWER !!! Typically one never knows this until there is a claim.....
Hagerty is one which is agreed value. And no I do not have anything now which needs special insurance
