Yeah the IMS bearing is a nec improvement (now that is it allowed, ... i think ;-).. But what else? Accusumps, other plumbing? Better bearings, rods, rod bolts? What of improving cooling ? Is the transmission still essentially plug and play or are there improvements? How big a % of build costs are nec improvements to make this platform race worthy for a few seasons?

Seems one has to factor this in as the cost for replacements is starting to get substantial...

from my recent indoctrination, ideal 996 engine mods for tracking are:

IMS update (factory update or LN)
X51 Oil Pan
Engine skid plate
AOS
Accusump

Deep pan, baffle kit, good quality oil changed frequently, inspect oil filter for bits at oil change, inspect IMS when opportunity allows etc. should be good enough. Oh, and aux trans. cooler.
I don't have accumsump. So far so good after 3 years of hard running.

^ You guys forgot: "And Pray"..

The above were all done and the the engines still grenaded..

Still a crap-shoot then as 'some engines are good and some are not as good', it seems..

Thx!

A race engine is a race engine.... Eventually it will let loose.

^Of course, ..............

its the number of seasons one can reasonably expect we are talking about here and how to extend that or plan (amortize) for replacement..............

And I should add that the 996 engine is anything but a "race engine".. Its more a mass produced cost driven thing (check the 993 or 99xGT3 Boards if any ?s, lol :-)

When you start treating a production engine like a race engine and make what are thought of as upgrades to create a "Race" breed engine... it will last for a period of time and eventually pass on to the great beyond.

There's a reason that when Porsche builds a race motor it a merzger. It's been the basis of every flat six racing motor they've produced including this years cup. If they could have used the wet sump for the GT3/cup they would have long ago. Unfortunately all the mods on the m96 do not offer the same robustness of the dry sump engine. Just do a search on RL or pelican. Build a spec 996, and then add the cost of one high G starvation rod failure or D chunk and you've bought a cup. Crapshoot IMHO, same for the boxster. If I had it to do It over would build up a GT3 or buy a cup...

You can spend just as much keeping a 996/7 race ready as a cup. Just look at a koni car...

This is a pretty good representation of what is going on in the class.

I was just looking on tire rack at the BFG R1's; they have an R1 and an R1-S listed (S=Sprint, apparently)

is either tire SP996 approved? or do you have to use one or the other?
The R1 is THE spec tire. R1S is not allowed.

Isn't it a hard comparison when an 04 996 GT3 costs almost 3 times what a street 996 C2 would cost to buy?

Great point! I keep a few ex Koni cars running for clients and it is in the Cup world of cost.
