Mine was originally built in July 09' with the PSS10's before the spec switched to JRZ's. I was lucky to find a low mileage donor for under $10k with a blown motor and replacement motors were cheaper 3 years ago. Consequently I ended up spending about $38k with all the spec parts ready to race including a new GT diff and 1 set of the 02' 5 spoke rims. Car was awesome out of the box....

Question, why build to 996 Spec when there aren't any (that I know of) running in Florida? Why not PCA's letter classes or even better GT3? They also fit nicely in NASA's GTS series depending on which motor....

I was also considering H but thought suspension would be more expensive, have seen a few running Motons or 3 way JRZ's. Would be new to racing so didn't want to run with gt3's or cups. At 40k and little resale I have to evaluate whether to build one or find a turn key in the 25-30k range

I assume operating costs on 996 would be cheaper and if only one running at a FL event would guarantee a podium :-)

At most events, you'll find the Sp996's placed in run groups with the Cups and GT cars.

It's been long enough since I built that my memory on the cost is a bit fuzzy. However I think you can plan on about $25k +\- on top of what you pay for the donor.

Build costs can vary depending on how much you want to spend on the cage, whether or not you do a sunroof delete, data system, cool suit, one seat or two, which seats, lexan rear window, what quick release, accusump or no accusump, lwfw, how many spare wheels, IMS retrofit,...

There are a lot of places you can spend or save.

I'm currently building an H car and parts alone are well over $40k. Turn key is way cheaper!

Except the fact you are a big guy, a Spec Miata is great IF you want to race with lots of competition. Other than that if you ate going to spend upwards of 50 to 60k $$$$ I would get a 6Cup for that price and they do hold their resale better. Or as VR pointed out thief isn't any cheap racing.

It's highly dependent on the cost of the donor car. The 996's, particularly 3.4's, seem to be getting cheaper by the day. In the end parts costs for the build are essentially the same as building a SPBOX.

And resale is unknown as I don't believe I've seen too many, if any, on the open market. But I bet if I were to sell my SP996 right now, I would lose a LOT LESS money than I will on my E class car when it sells. IMHO, the stock class costs are getting out of control given unlimited suspensions, new rules for chips, etc.

A 996 cup is always a possibility for a little more money, but the running & maintenance costs are definitely higher. Plus, I believe the SP996 class will take off, much like SPBOX did a few years ago.

So the 1,000,000 question. Buy built or build?

I know you can get 6Cups for $50-$60k. But the operating costs seem to be exuberant in comparison to a standard 911 platform.. Or am I missing something?

After seeing how strong the PCar engines are I think my next race car will be a 996 or 997. But as mentioned I'm scared of Cup operating costs...
