It is less surprising to me when I realize that the topic has changed MANY times!

I instruct at DEs locally when I get a chance. The reason I do this is because it is fun, I get to relax at the track and I get to pass along the knowledge of what it takes to drive a car fast to someone else. A DE environment is not as adrenaline pumping as club racing or pro racing. What it does though is establish a starting point for anybody who wants to go race. This is how I got started racing and I try to share my experience with others. I was one of the guys who wanted to have all the go fast parts for a DE. Now I feel like I am smarter with my money after that. I don't have the fastest tires on my DE car or the best suspension. I don't need it. So I always try to talk to people about how to approach DEs with more of a learning attitude than a full on Speed attitude.

This guy is the prototype of the point I made, as are a bunch of others he & I know. This is also why Seth and I try to partner as often as possible for coaching.

A little OT but here goes.
I've been instructing for about 2 years and will be the first to tell you that I feel that I have a long way to go both as a driver and as an instructor.
I have even been known to sit in on classes if it's being taught by a very good driver/coach because I feel that you can always learn something.
Sometimes I wish that "very advanced drivers" had the opportunity to have top level instructors ride shotgun like the green students do...

VR / Seth let me know the next time you're planning on instructing at a DE maybe we can get you to come out in the red group...
I'm sure it would be worth the drive...

Eddie, what tracks do you usually run?

In our area, we strongly encourage advanced drivers to take along an Advanced Instructor for at least one session per day each DE weekend they do. And we have worked really hard to build up a strong corps of AI's so that there are plenty available, with a whole range of skills and vehicle experience. But, it remains optional...and self selecting.

Same in our Region, and the several other Regions I run with. One issue can be that if you are in the instructor run group (Red in our case), and you want another instructor to take a run with you, you need to step down to black (our advanced drover group) so the person doesn't miss a run to help you. That is easily accomodated in most groups with notice.

I'm always surprised to hear one or more say something like "I would take someone out with me, but I'm not going out in THAT run group".

Wow, really? Most I know will take any opportunity to be on the track as much as possible. That's even worse...DE people putting down "other" DE groups!

Where will it ever end...
