This reminds of a student recently who approached me during a break to chit chat about my car etc then lays it on me. "So, how much can you make being an instructor. Must be a pretty good gig huh?"

I tell ya, if I had been drinking milk it woulda been coming out my nose. I had to reset his future career aspirations back down to reality.

Yeah, I get that sometimes too, Paul. Folks just don't know do they? Unless you're working for Skip Barber (and I'm told that even they don't get paid very well) or someone like that, money rarely makes the scene. I do occasionally get hired privately, which usually nets me a free track day and a little bit of money. That's always fun.

A student story here;
I was exiting the Keyhole at Mid-Ohio, full throttle in a 911. Left hand out the window for a passing signal (naturally) when I reached down with my right to to the 3-4 shift. Got back on line, asked my Instructor "Did you see that?"
"What?"
Me - "Never mind."

Oh, that is a good one. I love the honesty!

A long time ago, when my Miata was a street car and therefore still a convertible (it has a permanent hard top on it now, per GCRs), I went down the very long main straight of Thunderhill out here in California. I put not one, but both arms up as I went by the flagger stand (top was down, of course). Fortunately, I know that flagger well, so he didn't black flag me for the goofy gesture. Now THAT'S a good alignment!

I've had a student place his left arm over his head to signal the car behind us to pass on the right. The problem was that his arm was fully inside the car (and it wasn't a convertible). It took me a second to figure out what he was doing. We had a good laugh about it.........

I once stepped on the fire extinguisher in the passenger seat while taking a ride with an instructor. Scared the crap out of us when the white powder went all over the foot well. Luckily, it was a small bottle and it stopped as soon as I moved my foot. More luckily, the driver was a terrific sport about it.

Long dead floral scent I assume.

I used to use Motul gear oil and I SWEAR I'd rather roll in cat poo than to get a drop of that stuff on me.

I once rebuilt a differential, but had to wait on bearings. So the car was in the garage with the diff down. I spilled a little hypoid oil, naturally, on the floor while taking it apart. It stunk for a month! That has got to be on the top ten list of the world's most disgusting odors.

Actually, their engine oil (the fully synthetic) has a nice scent. Not bad at all....

No doubt. The Castrol GL4 that I use in the Triumph TR6 gearbox and diff smells like rotten egg/sulfur smell.
