So today I completed my "piwis journey" after successfully coding a fellow rennlister 718 Spyder

Total cost: around $50 for the VCI from AliExpress
  1. I got a 4-5 year old Lenovo T470 from a friend of mine, it had a large enough SSD, 1080p display (many people have unused old laptops with 1080p display just sitting somewhere. If not, the one I has can easily be found on eBay for less than $100)
  2. Got one of the Windows 8 PIWIS that is floating around the internet. I used google - anyone can do that. I didn't pay a penny for any of the forums that force you to get a paid subscription to get the download link (search for "40.400 Win 8.1_64 Pbk_full_b1_s1_v1.tib")
  3. Load the image you downloaded to the SSD using either Acronis or EaseUS - the free versions of both of those software will work
  4. You probably need to make sure your laptop is set to BIOS and not UEFI
  5. Follow the popular tutorial on how to use the keygen. For me, it is the first result when searching "piwis keygen" - very simple, explained step by step
  6. Use your AliExpress VCI ( https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...andl_shipto=US )
  7. That's it, basically

My take is that someone that feels comfortable enough programming their (potentially) several hundred thousand dollars car should feel comfortable enough doing the above steps and using Google

I would also like to thank @Treurentner, who shared great information both in this thread and on other forums.

Looks like there's an eBay vendor selling the 1.6.6 VCI too, for the original "normal" price range-they accept PayPal and usually eBay has good protection-most Ali vendors don't accept PayPal-
https://www.ebay.com/itm/40410272567...Bk9SR-Lh86y_YQ
If the 40.400 on that link works well(it's been there for quite some time) and it's not corrupt and working for you with no issues, I suppose it's a good thing...

Worked just fine. Not a huge fan of Windows 8, and there are better Win 10\11 versions out there, but they all do the same thing

The item you sent is also "Located in: Shenzhen, China" so pretty much the same thing as Ali (which also accepts Paypal)

any chance you know how to use my own car files in simulation mode? what I mean is that I want to be able to browse the coding options of my very own car that I programmed before, and not the generic one that is available (not 982 Boxster but specifically a 982 Spyder, in that case)

Not sure-I would do a VAL and Vehicle Handover of the car, then once they're saved you can open them and browse-

Continuing with my Piwis options, I have also set up VMWare Fusion 13 running Windows 11 Pro ARM on my Mac M1 Max Silicon-
So I have Paralllels 18 and VMWare Fusion, Parallels seems to be faster, but both are insanely fast as it is- Parallels is a breast to install Windows, Fusion was a complicated mess, but I was able to after a long day of research-

I tried a test and installed Durametric directly in Windows 11, but it will not run-
I'll search some more for new info, Windows 11 ARM is supposed to have backward compatibility and optimization with Windows 10
And things might change, hopefully. Not sure if a Windows 10 version of Piwis would install in Windows 11 ARM-

Since originally I believe Piwis was on Windows 7(not sure), then 8 and then 10, those making 10 versions might be able to create an 11 version compatible with Windows ARM(?)
I'll spend more time researching compatibility settings etc

Best,
JB

Eventually, they need to emulate all the x86 instructions and convert them to arm, which I doubt they will do for drivers (makes more sense for regular applications)

@JB 911 I didn't see whether the cheaper one you mention has WiFi, just FYI vs the $120 version

I'm not sure, and as I recall it's best to use the VCI with a cable(?)

Slow as molasses, use WiFi, unless you're going to be miles from the dongle

I've been reading some more on Windows programs compatibility with Windows 11 ARM:

New Lenovo laptops, running Windows on ARM:
https://pocketnow.com/lenovo-may-hav...ws-arm-laptop/

https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/lapto...sortBy=priceUp

Since new PC laptops are now starting to get released with Windows 11 ARM, compatibility will be increasing-
New architecture running much faster and cooler-

Hello guys,
I am in my journey of getting a PIWIS for my 997.1 and the wife's 992 2020.

I need to do a handover procedure to reset my heated seats, headlights washers, homelink and who knows what else is not working.

@rnlst_log I PM'ed you.

Hi,
several month ago I tried a PIWIS inplace upgrade to WIN11 on a physical machine Dell E5450 .
It works for scanning and coding but NOT for GFF (guided fault finding).
The reason is, that the underlying database driver from EMPOLIS not intialised correctly.
In chapter 3 of the Empolis Administrator guide (inluded in PIWIS) you are guided how to install IAS on a windows system.
If you do as described you will see that the command "net start IAS_NCS" will not run du to missing administrator privileges.
I did several attempts to get all the needed services properly running together (IAS xxx services, IGFX xxx modules. all PostgreSQL Server modules and SMILA.exe)
but got no final success on the database (all car brands were accessible but no DTC input possible).
If anyone got this to work it would be nice to see a little howto :-)
Kind regards
Marco
