I agree with Ferdinand, and my VM stops working with Windows 10 often, always a scare using Durametric.
So if Piwis was originally optimized for Windows 10, one needs to find a used Windows laptop with 8-I did see the garage forum list, and Windows 10 64 is available. But I guess 8 would be better(?)
A quick search of all Windows laptops on Bestbuy's site shows only 7 and 10 operating systems-
So if buying one, eBay might have used or refurbished Windows 8 laptops-
Which makes buying a complete system from the vendor list I made a simpler choice.

The issue with the VAS6154 smgkc posted (eBay link) is it seems to need to be set to 2020 date-also firmware can't be updated past 16.4. A search of MHHauto shows they are having issues with firmware. Belauto claims to be able to block the firmware update. So does a system with the blocked VAS6154, a laptop bought on eBay, and the 4.0 software from one of the garage forum vendors end up working with the date set to 2021???
It seems like one of the vendors I posted on the long list would be less of a headache-provided they work set to 2021.

But the garage forum guys seem to offer support-

I don't totally agree with Ferdinand. If you look at the old crappy Lenovo's you get from China, it's very clear that PIWIS does NOT take a lot of resources to run. 6th Gen Core i5 (dual core) with 8GB of RAM is not a lot of horsepower.

I have 38.2, 39.7, and 40.0 running on VMware with 2 CPU's and 8GB of RAM (my VM's are based on Windows 8.1 x64). They run just as well as the China clone Lenovo that I have. I have coded with both my Lenovo and with the 39.7 VM, but will likely do my future coding with my VMware setup.

What I will never, ever, do with a VMware-based PIWIS is ECU coding. That's where Ferdinand and I would likely agree.

runbuh, which VCI do you have? The snag seems to be that the VAS6154 firmware can't be updated. One could buy the eBay VAS6154 with the older firmware, a used windows laptop and I'm still not sure which version of windows is required-8 only? Then the instructions on the eBay VAS6154 is to set it to 2020 date. Does that mean then Piwis will only work with the date set to 2020?

I am using the 6154 clone that came with my Chinese clone laptop (it works with everything I have - as long as the system data is in 2020).

Do not worry about the OS - use the OS that comes with the image. No one is providing the PIWIS app, to my knowledge. You can only get a pre-built clone from China, or a disk image, both of which come with everything already loaded. The only difference with the disk image is that you must run Keygen after the image has been loaded to enable the software to run properly. If you get an image, then where you load the image (laptop or VM) is up to you.

If you check with Belauto, sometimes he has a clone 6154 to sell with his images, but those clone 6154's are getting harder to find (thus, they are getting expensive).

I will say: if you do not understand PC's very well, DO NOT go the VM route. I spent about 3 hours on each VM getting rid of drivers causing strange reboots, and generally making things work properly, and I sorta know what I'm doing.

Has anybody confirmed what type of programming (if anything) can be done with the PIWIS 3? Even something simple like program the “auto high beams” to stay on when you turn off/turn on car? That happens “automagically” in my 2020 Cayenne but not in my 991.2 (I have to enable this each time I restart car). How about ENABLING a feature (like Sport Exhaust - assuming you have installed the wiring & parts)??

Forgot to answer the other part of your question: I can't be 100% certain, but PIWIS seems to work fine, regardless of the system's date setting. What doesn't work when the system date is after 12/31/2020 is the PIWIS <--> VAS6154 interface. The VAS will not recognize your car if the date on the PIWIS computer is after 2020. So - boot your PIWIS, wind the date back, and code away. I have tried to disable date sync for my VMs, and told them to quit auto-updating their time from time.microsoft.com, but VMware is rather forceful about updating the time. Still figuring that one out. But I can just set the date back manually and things work fine (so far).

Also, I believe that there is more to getting any "off the shelf" VAS6154 working with PIWIS than just buying it off of ebay. Things to note: the firmware must never have been upgraded to 1.8 or higher. Once upgraded, even if it's downgraded to 1.6.6, it will not work with PIWIS. You may also need help from someone like this to make it work properly with PIWIS: https://mhhauto.com/Thread-Porsche-D...r-Piwis-3-PT3G (but he has not been responding to my PM'd questions - IM'd with him today via Skype). Belauto might know more.

This isn't true at all. VMware or any other virtualization platform is not any slower or less reliable than bare metal. It does however allow you to optimize and control available resources to maximize performance.

Just in case you want to take a chance. Seller confirms that firmware has not been upgraded past 1.6.x. Supposedly, banditt2 can program these units to work with PIWIS (for a fee). I took a chance and bought one.

Who is going to get yours working with PIWIS? It won't work with PIWIS out of the box (as I understand it).

Looks like somebody else bought one, too - the count is down to 7 (was at 9 before I bought one).

@JB911 mentioned some blog posts about getting the 6154's to appear as a PT3G (and thus, work with PIWIS). I have located a few and started trying to digest them.

As a few of us venture though this maze, I would make mention of one behavior I was warned about (and have somewhat noticed). One of tools you may need to use on/with your VAS6154 is a tool called "VX Manager". It's great tool for checking, and updating, the firmware on your VAS6154. Just be aware that if your laptop/VM has an active connection to the internet, then the software has the ability to go look for the newest firmware, and will prompt you to upgrade your VAS614. Don't do any upgrades past 1.6.6 (I've been told). Also, if the firmware included with your VX Manager software is older than what's installed on your VAS6154, then VX Manager will prompt you to DOWNGRADE your firmware. I'm thinking that's not a good idea, either.

I thought this was a good site for reading about firmware versions, but it doesn't even list the firmware version loaded on my VAS6154 (1.6.4.1):
https://www.vxdiagshop.com/info/vxdi...tory-4055.html

There's some interesting info at the same site if you search on VX Manager:
http://blog.vxdiagshop.com/?s=VX+Manager

In the example below, my (working) VAS6154 clone has 1.6.4.1, and VX Manager wants to downgrade it to 1.5.5.0 (this is the VX Manager that came with the PIWIS 38.2 I have. Nope. Not gonna do it.
