When I picked up my '18 GTS in Leipzig, my track (and off road) instructor told me that Porsche AG sells more Macans in China than the ROW combined. Also that there are more miles of unpaved road in China than paved. My Macan is excellent on rough and unpaved surfaces- also great in snow with the right tires.
You will be fine with any Macan model on the poor PV roads.
Thank you much for your advice. I think the S will suit me fine. I don't want to hear the sound of 4cyl. and Turbo may be overkill for PV. But ultimately, it comes down to finding the right one.
I am a new owner of a 2020 Macan , after 30 days of ownership post my 9 years of trouble free performance in a Audi Q5 I am delighted with the features and driveablity of the Macan. I could care less about what type of sounds ( engine type) a car makes. it's about quality and value received for dollars spent. At this early juncture I have no buyers remorse.
noob here to this discussion. Just started the research on replacing my 911TT with a Macan. GTS or Turbo. Not because I want to, but at 74 with 2 metal hips(hence the Tip) and other issues, may have to one day.
No track, grocery getter, occasional road trip with wife. Less canyon carving than I used to. Test drove a new dealer Turbo for 45 minutes about 5 years ago and liked it. Wife is indifferent, and I can get what I want, cost no issue. I configured a Turbo to $106K with mostly performance options. Wish there was a guaranteed delete Auto stop start.
Might do some off roading in the hills above, or need a snow car with tires where we now live. So the air suspension is a must have option, or I would just buy a $40K fully loaded Mazda CX-5 like my Daughter's.
How does the Turbo make so much more power out of the same twin turbo 2.9L as the GTS, for only $12,500 more?
I love my PCCB. Are the new PSCB an adequate substitute? No brake dust is more important to me than stopping distance. I have experienced not much difference in back to back runs with my Son's 2007 TT with steel. Can't find a detailed description on the PSCB.
Just a few questions to help me spend the money. Thanks.

PCSBs are experiencing unresolvable noise issues. PCCBs are awesome - stay with those which are proven.
Except I don't see PCCB as an option in the Macan configurator.
Maybe call your dealer and ask or buy regular steel and source a complete set of PCCBs from eBay or similar and swap them. I won't own another Porsche that doesn't have PCCBs.
I bought a 2017 Turbo with 45k miles with factory warranty + 2 year CPO (unlimited miles) for $55k in the exact spec I wanted (well sans hitch) that was originally $98k; CA executive lease, that Porsche Financial financed at 3%. I don't know what else I could have bought for $55k with that warranty + performance + slowing depreciation curve.
I would rather have bought the Cayenne Coupe Turbo, but for $90k more I couldn't justify it. I'd rather drive this for 4 years then give it to my daughter as her college car & let the depreciation gods do their thing with the '21 Coupes....
Lots of GTS coming off lease as well. If you are coming from a 911 background, the S is going to leave you wanting.
Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB).Standing still is not a usual option for Porsche. But if we do have to slow down, the PSCB, with a diameter of 390mm on the front axle, ensures outstanding performance. The White brake calipers with their glossy brake discs also set design accents. Standard on the Macan Turbo, optional for all other Macan models.
I'm lost, need a spread sheet. Seems Air Suspension is standard on the GTS.
Here's where $8K of the $12K goes:
Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) $1,500
Sport Chrono Package $1,360
Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB) with Calipers in White $3,490
Sport Seats Plus Adaptive Sport Seats Plus (18-way) with Memory Package $1,710
plus some minor cosmetic flourishes.

Smartphone cooling while charging is a nice exclusive option. Really helps preserve your smartphone battery life and performance.
If you use a vent mount for your phone, and live in a warm climate, the AC cools the phone effectively while in use.
It does partially block the passenger side center vent on pre-2019 interiors, but as the driver, that is a non-factor.
I've seen low mile options near me around $40k. and wonder if I should get a base. --- but the location and use really need to be considered.
Thoughts?
my situation is similar to yours. have a 996 turbo now and am near letting it go. i may need to be sedated when my friend picks her up and drives her away.
after much research re the issues of the v6 transfer case failures and the timing cover seepage/leakage ( just bad alum bolts and "over tq" specs?! ) i am like you thinking a chipped base model would do nicely. though i'd want one with a new(er) transfer case or CPO'd. though iirc? the extended pcna warranty for the t-case issues applies regardless of whether the car is still pcna factory warrantied or not. i believe they have pushed it to near 100k miles add'l coverage on that issue?
Great spec. I traded a 991.2 Cab for my Macan S, also in Chalk. I haven't looked back. We just returned from an 8000 mile cross country trip, and I have even more respect for the Macan as a cruiser, cargo hauler, and performance machine.
