GT4 G81 Transmission Failure

Maybe we should have been collecting transmission serial numbers and part numbers, if they indeed have them in a place that is readable...If the 3rd gear was changed, some identifier on the unit must also change I would assume.

You could save a lot of time by
just reading GTgears posts on this thread
and Mooty's.
It seems very likely that ALL the GT4 transmissions
have the welds that fail.
If you think otherwise, you are just rationalizing.
Mooty listed 10 other things Porsche has screwed up
like this in the past.
GTgears telling you that Porsche won't
address fundamentally, but will string everyone along to save $$$.
They will fix under warranty and cars will be out
of commission for a month or more, with no
guarantee that the "fix" won't break again.
Because will not be fundamentally fixing. Too expensive.
That's the truth.
Drive til it breaks.

As another GT4 owner said to me this past weekend at VIR - all the more reason to drive it HARD now! If it's gonna break, stress it, and hopefully it breaks under warranty.
I was wondering....did anyone have additional travel costs due to a failure? Like having to stay extra nights at a hotel? Rent a car or fly to get home? I wonder if Porsche (either National or at the dealer level) recognizes this and does anything to reimburse.
Of course there is the inconvenience, the loss of use, the loss of track time (if any), possibly the loss of upcoming event registration costs (if repair can't be done in time) and on and on...
I think I know the answer but I'm curious.

Well mine was recovered to the supplying dealership and was given a hire car to get home. Looks like i'll have it for some time as there are no gearboxes either in the UK or Germany.

Burning Brakes
Gears....do you think the broken trannies are being refurbished and put back into circulation? This would appear to be the case based on the supply on the shelf........Phil

There's no doubt. That's how they have done both gearboxes and engines for many years. When the new crate replacements run out they release a new part number with an X in it that designates it as a remanufactured unit. I haven't followed closely enough to see whether people are seeing a new part number on the replacements, but that would be my assumption based on previous history.

The tech told me the same thing. There would be an 'X' in the part number if it was a reman. He also told me not to base my opinion on how clean and bright the case looked. Apparently PAG does an outstanding job cleaning the reman units.
