Default Second loss...

Hello all of you at Rennlist,

After the loss of 3rd gear in Sept 2016 and a three months wait to get a new box, I just had a similar experience in track again: 3rd got blocked. After having being towed to the paddock and restated the car, I got the stickshift out of third and everything seemed fine. I have been careful and have asked them to tow the car to the dealership. They tried the car and lost third... they should get année box by next week. My car has 11.000kms, was delivered mid June 2016 and has less than 3.000kms of track time.
I really don't know if I want to go endlessly through these experiences with this car...

I used to say the 3rd gear issue was better than the DLC issue. Can't say that anymore.

Today I joined the club I was unrealistically hoping to avoid joining. On the bright side, I was about three laps from ending the day of a two-day DE at NJMP T-Bolt. Happened coming out of T5, in an upshift from second. I thought I missed the shift or something...and then there was no third gear.

My car was built right in the sweetspot, May 2016, and has just over 5,600 miles, with about 10-12 track days. Running RE71s with no mods except RSS toe links and a track alignment.

Discretion being the better part of valor, I am adhering to GTGear's advice and having the car flat-bedded to the dealer, who (I believe) already has Porsche approval for a replacement. Porsche Roadside Assistance is covering the haul, even though my dealer is slightly beyond the normal coverage range of 80 miles.

Hopefully quickly addressed. They must know which cars are subject at this point.

With kyrocks losing 3rd gear on his 10/2015 build it might be a bit more difficult determining the cars affected.

Doug, sorry, when we talked last week i was hoping you were going to dodge the bullet. Im june 16 ? thats why im taking my M2 to spring mountain in two weeks .If third went it would be either a 370mile tow or a 370mile drive with no third gear. i Just got a set of Raybestos ST43s made and some SRF for the M2 . i guess the M2 factory pads evaporate in about 5 laps!! ST43s are good for 1200F carl

Take the GT4- If 3rd goes drive it back or call Porsche to pick it up and bring to YOUR dealer. We gotta know if they all are going to fail- like the glued in fittings.

Ugh..back at the Glen Monday and wanted to just drive up in the morning (i.e.-NOT trailer...keeping it simple) and drive back after the last session--now afraid of losing 3rd and not being able to get home....

Got some interesting and potentially good news from my service advisor today. New tranny is ordered "and the good news is it's coming from the new manufacturer, as they ran out of the old ones." Given this, he had no idea of ETA.

Slightly different topic: Has anyone who had their tranny replaced tried to sell their GT4 and what, if any, impact do you believe it had on value? I am wondering if there are any diminished value issues, which could go either way.

Kevin, you can still drive the car home. The rest of the box works fine when third gear goes.

Doubt that they moved away from Getrag. The only other gearbox supplier nowadays (now that they have replaced the Bison slush boxes in the Cayenne) is ZF, and that is a different gearbox which cannot be easily swapped into the GT4. So probably / hopefully a new version with strengthened 3rd gear!

Is the 991 no longer sold with an Aisin 7spd based on the pdk?

Mike, I thought somewhere in the pages of this or the other gearbox failure threadit was advised not to drive the car after 3rd gear goes because debris from the failed gear (spline?) may further damage other components???

PS-- 2:02 @ WGI in the GT3 on Trofeo r's wednesday at the GVC-BMW/Niagara PCA event
