I had a customer satisfaction call today from PCNA and I told them I was worried about third gear failing. My take is that the call was entirely about this issue because we didn't talk about any thing else.

I got the same unsolicited call from PCNA; however, I did not bring up the 3rd gear issue. The first time, they left a message. I did not call back and they called again a few days later. This was over a month ago, may have been last year.
If you talked about 3rd gear for most of the call, what did the PCNA representative have to say about it.

Part number change means nothing. They always have a different part number for replacements. It allows them to track it and once they run out of brand new gearboxes they will plug in rebuilt/repaired gearboxes under the same number.
