FYI ... first review online - Autobild is almost first on any German Made Car to come out with a review (although short one) - praise of the car as expected - interesting comment is that the steering seems from the 991 Turbo (have not heard that one before...)

Wahoo, mixed emotions. This just made my decision way more difficult, as I was excited with GT Silver/red interior.

What is the advantage of the Spyder having wider wheels (8.5" & 10.5") vs (8" & 9.5") for the GTS when the tire size remains the same 235/35/R20 & 265/35/R20?

Will that make the handling more precise because the sidewalls will be less rounded.

Does this mean we can put wider tires on the Spyder like a 295 on the rear?

Probably not to any noticeable degree. Suspension mods allowing for increased negative camber would be a better approach for improved handling.

All else being equal, wider wheels will increase track performance - more grip and, more importantly, more usable grip (i.e. higher limits that are easier to approach without being bit). Yes, it's because the sidewall is better supported. You can use a wheel as wide or slightly wider than the measured tread face of your tire (which, btw, doesn't always correspond to the stated width), to increasingly good effect.

Well I'm probably not as knowledgeable as a lot of folks on tire issues, and maybe you are correct. At least one of the pros who has coached me seemed to think there was diminishing returns on tire width. He felt I'd be faster by going to slightly narrower tires on my 986S track car. Currently I have 275's all the way around.

Wider tires makes the contact patch wider and shorter for the same tire pressure. This means you get a more abrupt breakaway. Not so good on the street and not so good for an inexperienced track driver.

I would assume that Porsche put the wider rims on to improve handling. My experience in the previous Spyder was not to mess with it…it's that good out of the box and unless you are a serious track rat or top 1% autocross driver it's not worth it.

I can tell you that with my fairly wide 275's the breakaway isn't very abrupt. I've always been able to catch near spins on the track with relative ease. I've always credited that to the sublime Porsche mid engine chassis more so than the tires I'm running.
