I'll second it if it puts this thread to rest.
But why may I ask are you selling your 97 C4S and keeping your water cooled GT3 if the air cooled are the best.
It's a rhetorical question.

Aside from a small number of discerning purists, many of whom participate in this forum, I believe that most 911 lovers will evolve their position about the car over time to match the 911's evolution. For example, when the 928 was introduced five key characteristics were used to attack it when compared to the 911 of the day. It was an effective attack, by the way.
First, engine placement in the front vs the rear. This hasn't changed and never will and combined with syling cues, represent the two lasting characteristics between the original 911 and the current 997 and the future 911s to come.
Second, water cooled vs air cooled. At the time, the 911 followers wouldn't have it. Now they accept it as a requirement of a modern supercar to produce reliable high output competitive horsepower.
Thirdly, weight. When the 928 was introduced, it tipped the scales at a whopping 3200 lbs. That was about 450 lbs more that a 911 of the day. Of course, a 996 C4S weighs 3450 lbs, about 50 lbs less than my '91 928. A 'plain' 996 is about 150 lbs less than a C4S, but a good 100 lbs more than the 928 when it was introduced. I believe that they have taken some weight out of the 997 to be more competitive with the C6 Corvette and others, I am not sure but I understand that it is down to around 3100 lbs again. Remeber, the 'too heavy to be a sports car' 928 was introduced at 3200.
Forth, Size. The 911 has evolved through increases in wheelbase, length and width into a viable 2+2. It is now 2.5 inches shorter and 1 inch narrower than the 928 S4 or GT. When stripped down, however, to form lightweight or special versions, the same 'big' 911 is the basis of a great racecar platform. Not a surprise to 928 drivers, some of whom have converted another 'big' car, the 928, into a great racecar. Remember, the 928 was too big to be a sports car or a race car when introduced according to many 911 lovers.
Fifth, comfort. The 928 was far too luxurious to be a sports car. The A/C worked well and it had power accessories that added unneccessary complexity (and weight) to the car pushing it out of the sports car class and into something called GT. But a GT car can't be a sportscar, right? Has anyone looked at the gadget list on a 996 lately? Impressive.
My point is that for most 911 lovers (save the many true purists), they will love it for whatever it is and whatever it evolves into as long as it is referred to as a 911. (I will too, by the way.) The facts and stats are of little relevance. (You may be able to say something similar about us 928 lovers :^).)
II do have to admire the true 911 purists, however, who stick to the religion. Rear engined, air-cooled, lightweight, small and basic simplicity. Too bad Porsche doesn't make that one anymore.

I love my 928
(former 944 and 912 owner)
I would trade it for a 959
(lest, I would be insane)
959 re-defined Porsche capability and depth of history..... while manufacturing one for the most visually impressive vehicles ever conceived.

I have to agree with BrianPA, i too was surprised when the 928 had so many votes. Why?
