A thoughtful response. I agree, Porsche should be encouraged to push the envelope. The first thing to do is get back to racing. Unfortunately, the suits and modern day corporate mentality now hold Porsche hostage.

yes the Texans are narrow minded! and I got the offical pics of the 987 accross my tool book earlier this week and WOW, looks real nice and distinctly different then the 997 , the dash has round vents and other cool features. the front is nice, back looks similar, the side scoops have been lowered and made thinner. it looks like a completely different car and from what PCNA sent me it finally has recieved the bump in power it needed (ithink 280 on the S) but not engine size. I will try to remeber to email the pics to myself and post them

Metalsolid's the Pollmeister here. He's got another one up with some intriguing choices. In particular the several RS/RSR choices are the stuff of dreams. Likely ours only though as we've not seen RS/RSR models here in what? 30 years?

I would just love to see a 911 GT2 dominate the mid-tier GTS/GT2 classes with a 987 RS batting cleanup in GT3. Homologation being, of course, required

I'm not sanguine about the 'new v8.' The pictures don't look compelling and the target market segment is populated with 4000+ pound cars. And it is a small, highly-competitive segment.

Maybe Porsche will use an aluminum unibody and keep it several hundred pounds lighter than the competition. One can hope.

I took my 928 to a an all German car show this past weekend, my friend also brought his 928. No sooner did we park and start to clean up the cars when some guy came over, pointed to a silver 996 and said "I regret the day I traded my 928 in for that 996"

It is obvious that not very many people took this poll seriously... It appears that everyone just voted for the car that they presently own. However, the thread was not asking for "The Car You Currently Own," but "The Best Porsche Ever." The "Best Porsche Ever" to me means one that is superlative in every way. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of every Porsche made (I was quite depressed the day I saw the picture of the destroyed Speedsters recently), but the 928 series, 944 series, and 993 series each tripling and quadrupling the 959 and CGT just seems a bit ridiculous... Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my 944 Turbos, S2, and 968, but do I esteem them more highly than a Porsche supercar such as the 959 or CGT? No. Personally, I hope to own a 928GTS and 993 C4 one day (993 is the next Porsche on my list, in fact). That said, let's pretend that someone were to line up these 5 Porsches, and we could choose only one to take home with us: 944 Turbo, 928GTS, 993 C4, 959, CGT. I dare say that most everyone here, when faced with such a proposition, would take either the 959 or the CGT.

When you put things in that context other factors come into play. For example, the CGT would probably be my pick, since it's the one I'm least likely to go out and get for myself. So I'd get it, park it, drive it on weekends... and still make sure I had a shark for most driving. Half a Mill. vs 50K... Crap, I'd sell the CGT, build a house with a 4 car garage, build a workshop with lift & pit, and get 3 or 4 sharks.

One more twist to the equation. No one is saying what the Porsche is best for?

If you use NPS's line up of cars and say which you would chose? How are we qualifying this decision. Best for performance, best for looks, best for all around driving pleasure, best for holding it's value, best as a daily driver, best for picking up groceries. Best For WHAT?

I for one would love to have the CGT or a 959, etc, but if it was my only vehicle I would chose the 911 C4 or the 928 GTS given I only had these to chose from. The 911 1st because I love 911's and they are relatively cheap to repair in comparison to the others. The 928 comes second only because the cost to repair. I know I will get reamed for this, But if I needed to chose a Porsche for all around versatility and to use as a daily driver I would chose a Cayenne Turbo. No matter how many negatives you can throw at me the car is simply very well suited for about everything and still gives you the thrill, Porsche is known for.

When all is said the best Porsche to each person here is the one in their garage otherwise it wouldn't be there. The CGT is great for what it was designed for the 959 for the evolution it brought. But neither of these cars can comfortably or economically be driven daily.

Personally I think we have beaten the dog to death and obviously our passions for a particular model have influenced our comments, but to say which Porsche is the best is never going to be resolved without setting a serious of standards to determine what best is.

Maybe it is time to start a new series of threads asking which Porsche is best for a specific task and seeing were that leads us.
