Just like th eCarrera GT and the 959, the 928 was one of Porsche's most innovative products of their time. Think about all the stuff that was a "first" in these cars:

- Weissach rear axle
- fulliy integrated bumpers, painted to match
- Dashboard, center console and door panels designed like they were made of one piece (how many other cars had that in the meantime?)
- Instrument pod adjusts with steering column
- S4 models with automatic had the ability to soften shifts thwough engine electronics
- Also: For many years the 928 was fastest production car in North America

Those are just a few I can think of spontaneously. If you dig, there are more I'm just saying this to illustrate some of the reasons why the 928 is special to many of us.

OldGuy: You always had the option to custom order your 928 without rear AC and all the luxury goodies. They even made a Club Sport version in '88, and the GT from '89 onwards, which were both very sporty. It was largely a matter whether you configured your 928 for purely sporty driving, or bought the standard versions from the dealers lot (or even custom ordered more luxuries). THe potential of the 928 is scary - way above my limits - but I have seen others tap into it.

There are a few "sleeper" 928s in California - they look like many other 928s but have slightly enhanced engines. If you ever encounter one of those, you will see nothing but their tail lights. And while you might get out of your car soaked from sweat, the driver of the 928 will be dry and have a low heart rate. Maybe that's where the 928 lacks sportiness...

Would you prefer charged or stroked? It's all on the menu nowadays. No earplugs needed...

Sounds like something the owner of an E55 or M5 would say.

Its in the same Luxo-class Addison M5-- 928. The last thing I am in my TT is afraid. And 500 as Addison can attest is our starting point. A 500 hp Viper porker is nothing to fear and ferrari 360 is nothing to fear. and If we dont fear vipers certainly arent going to fear a 928. Although I hear the bacon grease left behind is something to be quite afraid of!!

"A 'good' GT at that" is like saying the 911 is a 'fair' sport car. In its time it was the greatest GT ever made. There are still very few cars produced that have the top speed -172- my GT has. I drove from New York to Oregon in 28 hours and never felt uncomfortable. If I got tired I would pull over and recline the seat back and sleep for a few hours. A 'great' GT in my eyes. Guys are SC'ing the engines with 100K plus on them. I could go on and on

You really have to take into account Nicoles posts (all) especially the one concerning Mark Anderson. The results are incredible!! Regardless of which model you own you should be very proud of what the Mark A 928 is doing. Look what Mark K is doing also.

The highest hp supercharged 928 running is putting down 625 to the rear wheels but is running an incredible amount of boost. It also has a hard time putting that power down so whether it hooks up or not is anyones guess.

As soon as a few more low compression engines are built I think we're going to see 700+rwhp using the twin screw supercharges and it will be reliable. I don't know whether 928 trannies will hold together under that kind of power. Maybe if they're not abused.

Fully weighted 928's with only 400rwhp are running low 12's with computers that retard timing during shifts to protect the trannies. So at even 550+ I wouldn't worry about any TT's on the road modified or not and the real beauty is that most of us are not going to be into these beasts for anything over 40 grand. You can get the weight down rather easily as well to something around 3000lbs. A well known tuning shop in So Cal wants well over 100 grand for a 550+TT with bodywork. I've ridden in the car and it is nice but..... No thanks.

We don't fear Vipers either:

The only porker out on that track was the viper. There was a 928 GTS that was eating snake tail all day long. Even my instructer that day was running circles around the viper, now that guy could make that old 911 SC sing around the track. Even a 951 was running faster than the viper that day. Point being the viper is a bad comparison unless your talking straight line speed, which is tedious and quite boring to anyone driving a Porsche!

Look I like the 928 I let a couple of adolescent thoughts creep into my head. but the truth is I dreamed of a Porsche for 35 years and when it came to a fruition it was the twin trubo. The TT and the 930 is what everyone thinks about when you mention Porsche. I would love to have a 928 to play with in the garage. but right now I am trying to make a 600Hp TT which is not hard to do and as it sits now will take 99% of the 928's in the world. But when someone says the 928 is the best of all, I beg to differ.

OG -

I understand where your coming from but ...........take a look at this. This may change your "Outlook". Dubbed the 2+2 - This Porsche is in the works.

From the Article:

Porsche's Front-Engine GT

After stirring up the faithful by doing the unthinkable (building the Cayenne SUV), Porsche is looking to add another model to its lineup that may appease a certain subset of Porschephiles, those long-ignored fans of the 928. Porsche has made no secret that it wants to use its V-8 engine developed for the Cayenne in other models, and a return to a front-engine V-8 2+2 GT, or even a 4-door sedan, is in the cards.

The new Porsche 2+2 would allow the Stuttgart factory to battle back against Aston Martin's DB9 and Ferrari's 612 Scaglietti. Porsche's twin-turbo V-8 would likely pump out 450-500 bhp and deliver that power to all four wheels. Sources say the platform for this car may come from the VW Group, with many pieces common to the Bentley Continental GT, which would help keep costs down. —

This future stuff is all speculation. Other magazines think it will look like this:

What I find interesting is that OldGuy thinks the 993 turbo is the best, but not sufficiently good as it is.

As I said earlier, you can configure your [favorite] Porsche to be pretty much anything you want. But optimizing it in one area typically takes away from another. Get better cornering - reduce ride comfort, get more HP, reduce reliablity and durability.

Whether 600hp make the car "better" or not can be argued. It certainly is no longer a Porsche in the sense of this poll. Same is true for the higly modified 928s.

I like mine as it came, because it does well in pretty much all areas. I consider it the best "car" (not SUV) Porsche ever made. As I said in my first post, the 911 is the best in the sense of what the Porsche marque traditionally stands for (and what most of their customers expect).

Oldguy I hear you but I offer this argument. When people think of Porsche they certainly do think of the 911 Turbo but when you sit in a 77-94 911 Turbo it is hardly comfortable. Sit in a 993 Turbo and up and it feels almost exactly like a 928. It is very obvious what Porsche turned their 993-996 line up into. Not the other way around. 911 Turbo is simply most recognizeable hairy beast Porsche, which ain't bad but it's not best.

(edit) Are there any flat 6 or twin turbo engines that can go 300K+ miles without a rebuild?

Agreed!!! If the 928 was the best Porsche ever built, why did they stop making them???
