Talking Easy upgrade for Cayenne 958 Bose tweeters (with a little bit of tech from Ferrari)

With the 991, lunarx identified a quick-and-easy upgrade to the Bose audio system by swapping out the budget Bose front tweeters to the Burmester AMT tweeter.

This makes a lot of sense, but it's not very easy to do this mod on the 958. With the 911, the plastic grill trim acts as the frame for the tweeter. On the Cayenne, the frame of the tweeter is part of the dashboard, so more modification would have to be done.

Stock Bose tweeter. The Burmester mounting points are there, but there is an additional plastic frame that prevents an easy, plug-and-play modification

The only other alternative mod was to put in Focal integration tweeters after removing the housing, as shown by ryem3 in his 997.

This isn't ideal for the Cayenne either, because the windshield and limited slack on the wiring harness makes it difficult to solder/secure the wiring.

The Ferrari/JBL Modification
It turns out, that there's an easy to upgrade your tweeters (depending on part availability). The Ferrari FF tweeter pod uses the identical connector and mounting system.

Step 1: Remove the trim price.

Step 2: Remove the tweeter by releasing the clips

Step 3: Release the connector

Step 4: Plug in the Ferrari tweeter (which uses the SAME EXACT CONNECTOR)

Step 5: Replace the tweeter in the housing and replace the trim piece.

Done.

The Tweeter

Ferrari part# 258166
Made in France by Harman

These are CMMD tweeters under JBL Professional badging. Originally developed by the Infinity division of the Harman group, CMMD tweeters are also found in the BMW Harman Kardon sound system (which sound great). They are heavier than the Bose Tweeters.

The Ferrari/JBL tweeters will take care of the drop-out in the 8-13khz frequency range of the Bose setup and simply just make the system sound better. With the Ferrari FF tweeters in place, my preferred final settings are +1 treble, -1 bass, Linear Mode ON, Surround OFF.

The 955 might use VW harness. Can you take a picture?

I bought VW Dynaudio tweeters and they use a different wiring system. That might be a good drop-in.

Alan,

The tweeters dropped in without too much difficulty and there is definitely a perceived improvement in sound quality. Thanks for posting this. Have you noticed any deviation in phone call quality in the car as a result of the upgrade?

Many thanks,
Joe

If we want to step away from "easy" - there are other options..

https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.co...ibbon-tweeter/ - Ribbon tweeter

https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.co...namic-tweeter/

And what the Burmester uses: AMT speakers - https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/amt/ the second one is particularly of interest - what's the diameter of the stock Bose tweeter?

This is it part# 10 in the first diagram?
https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/a...ber=7pp035411d

Which is #5 in the second:
https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/o...ker-7pp035411e

It seems these are all variants of part# 7PP035411, where no suffix indicates base audio, -D is Bose ("high end") and -E Burmeister ("premium").

The base and Bose appear to be the typical round cone style. The Burmeister, however, is a ribbon speaker and has a rectangular shape.

I'd wonder if the way they're mounted changes.

And if you want an example of scarcity and pricing, get a grip on your ankles first and then check out the difference in speaker grille prices of base and Bose vs Burmeister:

Got any clearer pictures of the part numbers on the bottom of that speaker? Might help find compatible models from other vehicles.

I'm noticing that the Burmester center channel speaker isn't that much cash, about $80 from ECS. I can't see any differences in the grille, so I'm thinking that this might be a plug & play upgrade as well?

I found a decent price on these (about $150 for the pair), however the vendor has a $250 minimum order. Would anyone be interested in going in half on a set of 4?
