I was in a situation where the hard drive in my PCM wouldn't properly clone with Clonezilla. It failed every time. I spent hours trying to manually set up the partitions as @kari had detailed, except one minor problem. When starting with a new blank disk and working in "fdisk" for partition tables of the "dos" type, you can only create 4 partitions--not six. So what to do? I found the most simple and fastest solution ever. Copy the partition map from crap disk to good one.

Plug both disks in to your computer, boot up Clonezilla, go to command line. Find out the list of disk partitions by typing

fdisk -l
Your results will show a bunch of disks. One will be an empty one being your new hard drive, it might come up as /dev/sdb /dev/sdc, etc. You'll also see another that has 6 partitions on it as @kari had listed. All we need to do is copy the partition map from the faulty hard drive you pulled out of your Porsche to the new hard drive you'll be using. It is so freakin simple. Lets assume my bad disk is "/dev/sdd" and my new disk is "/dev/sdb", from the command line, type in
sudo -s
sfdisk -d /dev/sdd | sfdisk /dev/sdb
The partition map will be copied from crap disk to new one. Pop that thing in your PCM unit, grab your Update Disk, turn it all on and let it rip! Took about 10-15 minutes for the full update restore, but damn, we're good now!

You initially create 4 partitions: three primary partitions and one extended partition. Once you save the extended partition, you can then create 2 partitions within the extended partition. the final listing will show all 6 as per my earlier post...

I tried about 100 times. I'd create all 6 partitions, and then when changing the FS type, it blew away the 2 last logical partitions due to dos limitations. Turns out, sniping the partition map is way easier and foolproof. I'll make a backup copy of my old drives partition map and post it. If one has the PCM Update disk, and a properly partition-mapped disk, one doesn't need to clone. Write the map, pop the drive in to PCM and let the update disk do the magic.

Heck, if i was a Porsche dealer, i'd just do this repair myself. Porsche could have totally just sent out a new harddrive kit as once you extract the PCM from the dash, the HD is so easy to replace.

Huge thanks to you @kari for posting everything you did, as i wouldn't have been able to find an easier way without you having the "fdisk -l" results showing with sectors, etc.

nice find but you will want the -I variant of this part to make sure you get that feature

I am willing to give this a go but find this part seems to be a challenge. Pretty sure we only need the smallest 64GB version but again, sourcing that -I
related sidenote, what model year (approx.) did this unit kick over to SATA? is there any way to tell before pulling out the PCM?

Afaik, I think it was sometime 2013 that they switched from ide/pata to sata.

If your pcm3.1 unit has the jukebox option , then you have a SATA 100gb hdd as oem but there are cases of full hdd failure or multiple hdd partition failure where you may not see the juke box option even if the unit supports it.

The other thing one can possibly check is the sim slot on the pcm faceplate but not sure if the transition to sata took place at the same time as the introduction of the sim slot... Maybe someone with a 2012 model can confirm...

I have a 2014 & a juke box
ok sounds like this 128GB "-I" SSD model, I need/want. I sent some inquires to both the manufacture and a couple retailers that should carry this line. If/when I hear anything I'll report back.

Hi, new to the forum.

I just bought a 2010 4s with a pcm that's acting up. restarting every few minutes. I'm pretty sure it's the HDD failing.

I haven't even picked up ther car yet, but the dealer lowered the price by 4.5k if i fixed it myself.

plan is to pick up the car right after new years, and I have a 10 hour drive home, If I remove the HDD can i still use the aux input for music?

since this a 2010 model im fairly sure it's an IDE drive, so im planning to do the clonezilla swap when I get the car home.

a 2010 958 ?
keep in mind if the hard drive clone does not work, you are lookin at $3,500 part and most likely a dealership visit to activate / code the new PCM
this is just my guess....

i would push for more off if you are willing to take this risk

no idea on the AUX input

it¨s a 970.

I could probably get more but the contract is signed now.

if the hdd swap fails i¨ll see if i cant get a used pcm off of ebay. I'm anyway going to be installing apple carplay so the need for factory navigation or Bluetooth is not there, only thing i can think of that i would loose the navi screen in the dash?

to do the cloneing i bought these, bought 2 of the ide to USB adapters to too a drive to drive clone? am I on the right track here?

toshiba ide hdd
ide to usb 2.0
