Default Meet Otis

Would like to thank Randy Wells and PCAs Panorama for the wonderful 11 page article on our Cayenne 'Otis' in the December issue. A lot of folks have helped us on our journey building our overlanding Cayenne. We have also done rally events like the ALCAN 5000, Totem, No Alibi, etc. While the build has been an adventure, our travels have taken us to many places where we have met wonderful people. It is truly fun to color outside the yellow and white lines!
.
Also thanks to PCAs web page from which we copied the attached picture. Here is the link to the online issue - you then have to click the link to the 'Interactive edition' to read the article online starting on page 58: https://www.pca.org/login/panoreader/dec-2016

Otis is a looker, even up close. It's the reason I bought a pig to go with my 986

Best way for folks to see what Overlanding is about is to attend a local rally. The events are for both 4 wheeled and dual sport motorcycles. Most of the pictures from the 'Meet Otis' article in the December Pano were taken at the Northwest Overland Rally. Think of an event as big as Parade but more interesting for families traveling the paths less taken. The next NWOL rally will be in Plain, just outside of Leavenworth, WA from June 15-18 2017. For more info see www.nwoverlandrally.com - After the NWOL rally there will be an off-road trip up to BC Canada for the BC Overland Rally 22-25 June www.bcoverlandrally.com
The mother of all overlanding events is put on by Overland Expo. www.overlandexpo.com - Think of these two events as being Parade and Rennsport combined.
Lastly this community is very welcoming, family friendly, leave no trace behind. This community is NOT into rock climbing or finding the deepest mud hole. They do love good food at the camp site, think steak risotto, antelope sliders, twice cooked pork tenderloin with a sauce of nectarine marinated in grappa.
Hope to see y'all on the trail - let us know about your adventures. Cayennes are truly worthy.

Here are some more articles on our CD 'Otis' Our first long trip, an extended off-road trip, and a day trip with other local Cayenne's. We have taken many other trips and road rally events but seem to now place fun over writing additional articles.

As others have already said, and echoed here (but can't be said enough) ... Thank You for the info, pictures, and intro to over-landing.

touareg,
As you appear to be on the east coast would highly recommend attendance prior to buying anything at Overland Expo EAST, in Asheville, North Carolina - Sept 29 - Oct 1, 2017 http://www.overlandexpo.com/east

Ours starts with an 8x8 foot ARB awning mounted to the rack. From this an ARB 8x8x8 foot room is suspended. This gives you a double celing/roof, screened door to the outside, screened door to enter the SUV, screened windows. This does have a bath-tub floor to prevent water intrusion. You want the room to be mounted as high as possible, if it is not 8 feet above the ground the side will sag. Only an issue if it rains, if the side sags and collects water it will come inside. We solved this using large 'bull dog' type paper clips - the black kind with two chrome handles. Take a tuck of fabric and clip it at about 1 foot intervals.
The opposite awning 6x6 is from TJM - from this we hang sides as a sun/wind/rain screen as needed. This side is used for cooking, eating, relaxing.

The rack is a Yakima Tower, would not recommend these as the basket does shift from left to right. Many others to consider like AEV, Rhino Rack, ARB, etc Note this is still an issue with only one wheel on top. We have since mounted one spare off the rear bumper.

There are other systems which may work better for you. Roof top tents RTT come in two main styles that can be augmented with awnings. Maggiolina has been in business since 1958 and are probably the best available. Has an actual mattress. An advantage of the crank system is that everything inside is secure while closed. www.youtube.com/watch?v=38qP6904uk0
Another popular style, many brands is www.youtube.com/watch?v=fH4Sqsxxb2c

Disadvantage with the above is that once camp is set up you need to take the room / RTT etc down to drive anywhere.
This rig would be our dream set up, light enough to tow, tough enough to go off-road, not to wide for narrow trails, all the comforts of home. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSGedXi2riY

Overland Expo EAST is a great way to see what is out there and speak to folks about their experiences. Just the classes are worth the trip.

Hope to see you coloring outside the yellow & white lines!

Hard to believe that these additional mods to 'Otis' were done a year ago in prep for the ALCAN 5000 Winter Rally. J&L Fabricating did the Bush Bar and Skid Plates. Cyclops Adventure Sports did the aux lighting, very glad we took their advice and did not go with a light bar. Cantrell Motorsports, a well known P-car shop, did the rock sliders, roll bar - interior winch mount, modified rear tire mount, and aux rear lights. HRO provided the HAM and CB radios. XPEL STEALTH wrap in a satin finish has saved our paint from being scratched by brush on narrow trails. RAM mounts to organize the cockpit gear which would have been clutter. Das Mule for lots of bits and pieces and advice. Huge believer in Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8s after this and other runs. Filsons and Feathered Friends both for their awesome clothes enabling us to survive winter in the Arctic. PCAs PNWR for their driving programs that taught us a lot! Northwest Overland for their off-road driving and survival classes. I am sure to think of others I should have thanked after posting this. Any questions on our build and what we would do differently please ask. In addition to getting groceries and long tours, our P!Gs are capable at autocross, off-road, and TSD rally.
The attached photos are from a Cantrell Motorsports FB post.
