OK I will bite

Pretty sure 955 TT also had scoring, but its such a small sample for all 955, I don't think its that much of a worry

As mcbit implied above.. its the "piston cooling via oil spray" that separates the FI & NA v8. Also the cylinder scoring issues is virtually zero in warm climates. The colder your environment the higher the risk.

I believe on the 4.5l engines the cylinder bore treatment was different on the naturally aspirated engines to the turbo engines although I can't remember the names of the treatments. On later engines they are all the same as the turbo.

Horror stories appear about most mechanical devices; some of the farm machinery forums I visit tell terrible tales of expensive failures on premium equipment. When you have owned a good number of machines you will experience the odd lemon and sadly they seem more memorable and more widely reported than all the good machines that ran well. I shall be gutted if my CS suffers a catastrophic failure but if I'm one of the unlucky ones I shall have to sort it one way or another. It never plays on my mind when I'm behind the wheel and flat to the mat!

I haven't seen anything in the books regarding different cylinder bore treatment between the S and the Turbo. The main differences are cast pistons in the S vs. forged pistons in the Turbo, and oil spray jets on the Turbo only for 955.

Thus far ALL the accelerated wear and failure we have seen in cylinders of the Cayenne engines when reconstructing them have come from use in extreme cold climates and from only the S models.

Porsche dealers sought out our services after OEM crate engines suffered the same issues when used as replacements in these cold climates.

I REALLY like the internals of the Cayenne V8, after addressing the cylinder deficiencies they are very robust, much more so than any other modern Porsche engine I have worked with. Thats all the rest.

What was the conclusion you guys came to as far as the problems these engines have?

Improper skirt clearance for the piston materials. We solve it with Nickies and JE Forged pistons.

And that fix only pertains to the NA v8 4.5L?

Thanks for the feedback! I value your input! Would you say all 4.5L V8's are affected?

Thus far, yes.. Only the S models seem to have the condition.

There's becoming a huge demand for the engines now, especially when people learned that we can make the 4.5 into my 5.1 for the same cost :-)

What's the cost and power of a 5.1 build/install? Are you talking NA or FI for 5.1?

I've only been doing the Cayenne engines for dealers and distributors thus far. I plan to offer the performance engines direct and fully installed in 2014. The price is around 20K.

The 5.1 has modest power increases of 60 ft/lb and 55 HP over stock for my stage I and 65 Tq/ 75HP over stock with Stage II ports, CR and camshaft manipulation.

Those numbers are with stock intake, exhaust and cats :-)
