Burning Brakes
I've been on this forum for a year and don't recall reading a post that actually reports this happening. Several threads on rumors and fears, but the actual occurrence seems low to rare.

As I wrote in another thread there are upwards of 300,000 M48 engines out there and I cannot find more than about 15 unique posts on the internet worldwide from people have had this problem.
Apparently it is much more common in cold climates and XR4Tim reported a failure rate of around 20% whilst working in a dealership in Alaska. My Porsche specialist indy has seen none.

Seems to be mostly restricted to early 955 Ss, the 955 turbos and all 957 M48 engines have oil spray piston cooling which also assists with cylinder lubrication.

It happened to my 04 S. I'm only one data point, but likely not buying a 955 again. I now have a 957 V6.

Haha i heard those are pretty bad.
Does anyone know where to inquire about prices about a used engine? This uncommon problem is keeping me up at night thinking if i should keep the cayenne or not

I just stated my experience and what I have now, which is a newer (and hopefully more sorted) Cayenne. So far so good with the 957 V6 @ 61K miles, which is more than the miles on my 955 when I sold it.

I have two friends both with Cayenne S's and both needed engine replacements. A lot of them followed Porsche's high drain interval (as high as 20k) back in the day which I'm sure was part of the problem. I was also told there were some flaws in the piston coating and cylinder liners of this engine. How true this is I don't know.. If you want a bullet proof engine get the turbo! If you are a gambling man get the S.
Unfortunately, Porsche track record on engines hasn't been the greatest lately...
