You can buy a automotive stethoscope for about $15-20 at the local hardware store. You would be amazed at what you can hear going on inside the engine.
All the "noise" goes away when you touch the stethoscope to the engine block and all you hear is that specific location. Obviously be VERY careful around moving parts like the fan and belts!!! You should be able to touch most of the rest of the cyls and valve cover locations and listen to what is going on.

I will record the sound and post it here when I get the stupid thing started.

Resurrecting this thread, last week my 2004 C4S with 82,000 engine failed. Always dealer maintained at proper intervals. About 8 months out of extended warranty. Was coming home one night, started to stutter, then just quit like the engine fell out ! No idiot lights or anything. Stealer wants 30k to replace engine! Bore-scope revealed no piston in cylinder 3 and visible crack, coolant and metal in oil. Any ideas on best approach to get Porsche NA to own up and do the right thing? If not, any idea where/how to get rebuilt short or long block?
Thanks for the advice

Do you have a Cayenne or a 996? There should be plenty of Cayenne V8 engine out there from accidents in scrap/part yards. You could probably find a running used Cayenne one for 10k and do a engine transplant.

I'd find a like for like engine. Switching a new different engine you'd end up with a ton of other issues and probably emissions problems not sure a dfi engine could even work in it. I have not heard of any engine problem with the Cayenne that needed to be fixed. Only hear about coolant pipe problems.

Theres nothing wrong with the 04 V8, I would stick with like for like, you might end up replacing much more than the engine to get all the control modules to match before it will run and they ain't cheap

So my cracked cylinder indicates nothing wrong? Along with the numerous other failures in this thread? How can you say that?

I have to agree with the advice already given, there are plenty of 4.5 V8s around with plenty of miles on them. The problems with 955 V8 Cayennes are generally with the ancillaries and not with the engines themselves. I would quite happily go out tomorrow and buy another one.

Wish I had your optimism, but I can't get into another Porsche at this time - soured. Any suggestions what to do with this vehicle that needs an engine? try to sell as is, find used (where), any rebuilts out there?

Best to search local part/wreckers yards or ebay. I found this one here. No affiliation. http://www.ladismantler.com/parts/77...4-5-V8-Engine-

Drop it off at a boat ramp and let her roll......
Or have a 928 guy tell you how to hack in an American crate motor.....

You don't post your location but there are a couple on Ebay. Also a large wrecking yard usually will have access to a National Database of wreckers and may be able to help you with a search.
