I was thinking along similar lines; a simple shield mounted to the shock should help and (I would hope) be considered part of the shock assembly and OK in SCCA rules, but anything like that starts to become questionable. I asked Lex @MCS last week if the heat issue could be fixed with some heat shielding to allow use of the non-remotes, but he hasn't responded.
I've decided to to with a full PASM retrofit for the time being (since I need to anyway for the springs) and go from there if I'm not happy with the PASM dampers. As it turns out, between LA Dismanlers and ebay, I've sourced most the PASM parts I need used for pretty cheap (relatively speaking), and I have everything on order. Only parts I haven't quite figured out yet are the connectors; Sunset Porsche said they may be able to get them for me if I can find them the part#s (which I don't have yet), but I'm hoping LA Dismantlers can ship me a complete set w/pigtails I can splice. Porschelibrarian @ Renntech was a huge help in figuring out the wiring; internals plus a couple power leads and a CAN bus interface, so hopefully not too difficult. LMN Motorsports and the dealer both said they can enable it once it's hooked up; LMN is doing my alignment, so I'll let Lutzo take the first crack. Might have him do some of the install work, too.

I think you are fine with anything mounted or wrapped on the shock. shocks are free. one idea: http://epner.com/default/index.cfm/processes-and-products/thermal-barrier-foil/

I'll ping again on Lex if I decide to go deeper down the rabbit hole, but don't want to bother anyone just for curiosity's sake. My wallet is sure hoping I'm happy with just PASM! The car was surprisingly well balanced at the first autocross yesterday on the stock 987.2S suspension, but definitely could use the stiffer springs and struts.

You are correct with with a heat shield and and a air gap DEI may have something that is made for cats or mufflers. I also wish my car has PASM as the the car would be lower and stiffer. I will be waiting to hear what you think of the change once it's done as I would like to move to a C2S cab for helmet room. As I'm 6'6" I fit in a C2 without a helmet, but that helmet makes me lay the seat back to much.

Well they have 15 cars in SS for the nationals. All Porsche and Lotus and that is all I see here in Colorado. 15 cars not a bad turn out for SS, but the GT3's are going to be hard to beat. I would love to have a GT3 but my pocket book says are you nuts and the seat of my pants also says are you nuts you can't use a Gt3 as a DD.

I autocrossed with an SCCA club for the first time this year this past weekend. I did not remember having to compete with S2000s! (I've got a showroom stock 2.7 986 on Direzza ZIIs). Turns out, my car went from C Stock to B Street- not sure how that worked out. But it was nice to actually be able to run my base class rather than the tire index- in my opinion, the tire compound restrictions are the most important change that they made and it is absolutely a positive change.
The two S2000s in my class beat me pretty good but I paxed 22nd out of 69 so I'm not too disappointed in that.

I had a similar reaction. But, I don't think Star Specs have ever been available in the wider sizes so many cars need these days.

Jason @ Paragon just posted that Koni is selling adjustable 986 shocks now:
