You think you are going faster, but in reality the grip of the tire is masking your bad habits. With stickier tires bad things happen at a higher rate of speed......just ask the 996 GT3 on slicks that t boned the wall in front of me on sticker Michelin Blues......it took three turns after he passed me (on Toyo) to overdrive the car into the wall

This is just a fun hobby, different storkes for different folks.......but if you want to become a better driver, with better skill......check your ego, throw away your lap timer and run a street tire. With the money saved by running street tires, hire a coach.

As far as lap times go....at COTA, if you are not consistantly sub 2:29 (including traffic) in a 2010-11 GT3RS......you are underdriving your hoosier by a large margin and should learn your car on a less sticky tire so when you get to the point of moving up tires....you are ready
All excellent points and I agree on all counts. My buddy ran a 2:29 in a completely stock Z06 (besides brake fluid) and stock Michelin PS2 runflats at the TDE COTA event. It was the Z07 model though (CC brakes/mag suspension Z06). I've tried to get him to run Michelin slicks like I do, but he prefers the ease of driving to the track, running, and driving home without swapping/hauling race tires.

I personally like my slicks though as it's even easier to drive (for me) as I'm not sliding around as much as I was on street tires/sport cups. The grip is huge, but as that Vorslag graph showed, if you drive outside of the tires limits, it snaps pretty hard. Pretty easy to stay inside the limits though.

Very nice saves, Peter. Yeah, if you're on slicks, it's pretty hard to slide through an entire corner. The tires grip so hard, it's pretty hard to rotate the rear end unless you're doing something wrong. That has been my limited experience though.

Unless you have Pat Long/ Sean Edwards like catlike reflexes, that event is an off track excursion on slicks. Some slicks more friendly than others, but frankly I wouldn't want to do that on any tire.

Default No, really, it's driveable ...

It's a 4 door, although that makes little difference, the wagon is not much heavier. The 2.7T manual (aka "S6") wagon was not sold here, apart from the allroad crossover which has foo-foo air suspension.

It's not stock; I actually modded it with the intention of becoming a better driver while shopping for the used Nissan, which I found in less than a week. Murphy works both ways The suspension on it is a slightly tweaked and lowered version of the RS6 setup, aftermarket from H&R but TUV approved. It's also got more power, better brakes and RS6 18" wheels.

Believe it or not, you can hang the tail way out like Ari Vatanen in a Mk 1 Escort and it loves it, an unexpected surprise. It's not quick on the track though, and you need to be careful not to run out of room to catch it, that I need a lot of practice at doing faster.

Haha, more like not willing to give up and they were pretty slow corners..Ithink slicks are harder on the driver, bearings, brakes, etc. etc..

Are they taking deposits? Actually, I always fancied the Sea Wolf missile launchers on the Jag in The Living Daylights

Sure is fun, though huh?

I agree slicks are harder on the suspension/wheel bits and the driver. People give me crap for hand positioning in my videos, but most of the time I'm having to jam my left elbow into the door to get from coming out of the seat. Vette seats are horrible for track work if you didn't already know. Rest is just sloppiness on my part.

Re: the brakes, higher average speeds will heat up the brakes more, but my track wheel/tire package is quite a bit lighter than stock, so that should help a little bit.

And on slicks at that! Id much prefer slower people on track in the advanced/intermediate group that at least know the basics.

Unfortunately this is the type of driver we see in GTRs over and over again. People who want to go fast without learning how to do it properly from a drivers perspective.
I'd be genuinely interested in specific critique ... I bought the GTR just to possess it because of the tech, and then decided to track it because that's the Texas thing. I'm very aware that it hides a lot of mistakes I've decided now to get a bit more serious about learning track driving.

This will be easier and better in a slower, lower grip simpler car. I asked Rick at TDE if it was OK to bring the Audi and he did concur on the idea with me and Bill Dollahite. I was a little concerned about becoming a traffic problem, but it's quicker than it looks.
