Hoosier R6 longevity & cost vs R compound street tire AT THE TRACK

Vortex took my CCW's and had the bead of the wheel blasted/roughed up. It helped a lot.
I was watching the Michelin and Dunlop guys mount race tires during the Sebring 12hr race last Saturday.
1- most all the race wheels have a knurled finish on the bead of the wheel. Much like the Ray's wheels Savyboy is selling.
2- Neither Michelin or Dunlop mount tires dry. I asked a guy from Michelin about mounting dry and he said too much of a risk in damaging the tire bead, too hard to mount if you try to mount dry.

- NASA gives a discount here in Florida to NASA members buying Hoosiers. A local NASA Time Trials driver owns the sponsorship shop that sells Hoosiers plenty cheaper, considering the discount and local pick-up.
- Run a TT class, win 4 Hoosier tires on the weekend, and suddenly Hoosiers have become cheaper than RA1. My little Coxster gave me 19 free tires back in 2010.
- Nothing beats RA1 for grip, longevity, predictability and cost. These tires were highly improved when Toyo co-developed them supporting the Speed World Challenge GT and ST classes. The tires were used rain or shine, on heavy and light cars, with and without aero, with and without torque, FWD, RWD, AWD. Hopefully RA1 come back on the 305/35, 335/30 sizes. People denying the use of RA1 by forcing their Aero Beetles to run on 19" should consider a cheap set of 18" wheels and RA1, because nothing in 19" works for street/track/autoX, nothing.

Agreed on the 18's.

The 3pc BBS I've seen at shops and at the races have a black rough coat type of strip around the bead of the wheel. It's almost like that spray on truck bed rough protection type of stuff.

John at CCW used to have a shot peened finish wheel that also helped prevent slipping. :thumb up: Oh thats right you boys have those uber fancy CL wheels not like us poor folks with 5 lugs.

Problem is you can't go out and buy RA1 for our cars....they don't make the 245/40/18 and 305/35/18 sizes anymore.

So Toyo is making new RA1's in 335's? If they are older 335's that's fine but soon they will be gone and what scares me is I'll have 18" wheels with nothing that fits, beside Hoosier...no?

For your Carrera GTS (same body as 4.0 and 3.8 RS), just stick to 12x18 on the offset used by the Aero Beetle boys.
Next time you're at the track, ask Reter or Izzone to let you borrow their rear wheels, install them in your Carrera GTS and verify that they fit as I say. Then go buy some cheap 18x12 and enjoy running RA1.
Your car also fits the 275/35R18 RA1 in the front (I ran it on 10"wheels on my narrow 996 GT3), but that needs some tricks I don't want to disclose, to avoid running out of space in my PM inbox.

Your car fits the 335/30R18, you have a widebody car. I ran 335/30R18 RA1 on the ultra narrow 996 GT3, if it fits 996 GT3 it fits 997 wide body, you just need the proper offest wheels.

Remember I don't have the cool adjustable aerobeetle GT3DE Cup shocks...my lowly GTS has regular Carrera S non-adjustable shocks....so I can't rotate struts and such to fit baller 275 up front. I also don't have the widebody front track the aerobeetle boys have...just the rear wider track. I do have some baller 997 GT3 Cup LCA's for camber adjustment with Tarrett mono-***** and RSS solid thrust arm bushing for adjustable caster....only cheater parts I have...
I'll be in Lauderdale/Miami April 24-26...need to take you and Eddie and Reter to dinner for some inside cheater parts scoop to possibly step up the lowly GTS some....we'll see.

Last I recall, there's no fitment even close (assuming you mean BFG R1) and there's a Dunlop (?) R1 slick that's available in other sizes, but nothing close to the peculiar arrangement on a heavier/later model 911.
