I thought I read that it was important to make sure you have the battery fully charged and connected to a battery charger…

could that be the issue?

You need a clean power source, since the 997 era a minimum of 40 Amps. Powermax and others make these, and some people also use computer power sources on ebay and adapt them to use in cars. Some people think they can get away with less than 40 amps to save money or something, but the factory manual specifies 40 amps. Newer cars as high as 90 amps

Depending on which car you have, you may need a 90 amp supply-

I was hoping someone could help me out. I'm looking for coding functions on my 997 GT3. I emailed Belauto and he had two versions of the software. I'm not sure which one I need:
38.250 Full Engineering + 38.900 (Taycan)
38.200.017 Full Engineering

Which VCI are folks using off Ebay and such?

Thanks

Any of those software versions would be great
The VCI you want is firmware version 1.6.6

FWIW, I had a faulty PowerMax 75A. I swapped out under warranty for the new 75A one with a handle and integrated volt meter aka PMBC 75A. It's 100 bucks more than the original one.

Thanks JB. I wasted to make sure FW v 1.6.6 was correct. I saw some VCIs with v 1.86.

If the password was set up by the Chinese seller, odds are it's not anything common.
The Various Genuine OEM VAS systems I have all have a known password. I've never had my hands on a 'real' PIWIS, so I can't confirm what those passwords are.
I've removed various Panasonic Toughbook and Toughpad passwords using a method similar to the one found here.
https://gist.github.com/en4rab/55088...f3039e3c8ab6fd
In my case, I didn't care what the password was. I just blanked out the passworded area of the bios, saved it, and reflashed the machine with the newly cleared bios file.
Since this isn't an electronics forum, I don't think further discussion of how to read an EEPROM, hex edit files, or flash BIOS is appropriate.
Good luck!

I bought a Foxwell NT530. It does a lot but can't read camshaft deviation or rpm history on my 986. Not impressed. I'm thinking I'll buy a PIWIS II clone rather than the Durametric.

Maybe describe what you want to do with an analyzer?

PIWIS 3 is the latest with software v 40.7xx and VCI 1.6.6.0.

Launch, latest version does reset SRI and oil change light. Not as powerful but a lot more practical (handheld, no tether between ODB and unit, lighter and Search functions are available throughout). Lastly if you have several non P vehicles Launch is the choice.

The Foxwell and similar certainly don't do everything, but the PIWIS is honestly just such a PITA to use I rarely break it out...

PIWIS issues with using current date on the computer, seemingly endless driver issues, a required dance of hooking everything up in the exact right order or it not connecting properly, constant software complaints if you don't hook the car up to a high-amp charger even if you need to do something quick, lots of cables dangling, etc. I usually spend FAR more time just trying to get it up and running properly than actually performing any given task with the PIWIS... I will ALWAYS reach for my Foxwell first to try and get something done and only use the PIWIS as a last resort. Perhaps I have a marginal clone box, perhaps I really need to buy the turnkey computer rather than running it on my windows setup, but as-is, I kind of hate using it.

Durametric falls between the two... More of a hassle than Foxwell, less than PIWIS. And I also really don't like that the Durametric will also sometimes appear to take care of something (like a service interval reset on my 991), but not actually do the reset. No error, no complaints, says completed, but the indicator is NOT reset, something the Foxwell handles with ease.
