In my case the P tech inserted a long screw driver into the tensioner ( not sure exactly where ) while the engine was running, and that increased the slack and my slap, tick noise disappeared. I then smiled cautiously......

This is my take. It’s not ideal, but it is a plan.

Not sure this helps but just one more well wisher here hoping this turns out positive for you. Sorry to see you have to deal with this so early on in your ownership.

Good luck man.

Don’t mention it. By the way - I haven’t driven it recently but happy to record a video cold start up of my car for comparison if it helps. 997.2 S

Sure. Happy to get another data point.

It's a bummer that you're up against a deadline. As others have mentioned, 12 hours of labor seems excessive to perform the inspection of your cylinders, but I understand your position.

Absolutely make sure they provide pics/vids of the bore scope. Did they happen to send you any pics from the top of the cylinders when they scoped them through the top?

I'm with @TheBruce Did they absolutely rule out the water pump? If they use a mechanics stethoscope, they should at least be able to pinpoint where exactly the sound is coming from.

Like everyone else, I'm rooting for a cheap/easy resolution or answer to your situation. It's a beautiful car, and I hope that you can start enjoying it worry free very soon!

The way I read Jake’s post was that he didn’t want to step on toes while the issue was being diagnosed. Now that the diagnoses has come back in would it be wrong to get a second opinion from FSI?

What about the oil filter any metal? Also when they pull the pan they can observe for metal there too. Could you use that as an intermediary step (i.e check the filter and sump before going further)?

I am one for driving until a real problem manifests, although your situation is a bit different with the warranty.

Agreed. I think he was also avoiding having a public conversation about it, but you may want to reach out to him directly to get second opinion.

Maybe not the craziest option, but you can buy an extended warranty from Fidelity to cover yourself for the future in case this drags on too long or is inconclusive. There's one fellow that the RLers use to get great prices on Fidelity warranties without inspection. I did it in 2017 and it was super easy via phone/text/email. Fidelity didn't bat an eye when I needed to have my transmission replaced about 3 months later. Anyway, good luck! I will jump on the bandwagon and say that the knocking is not normal. Fingers crossed for ya.

There are some RLs I'd probably buy from but like friends and relatives, it's best to have an independent 3rd party to prevent misunderstandings or popularity contests if something goes south.
Good and bad independent 3rd party's though so some research required on that too. RacerWannabee had the PPI done and was told the knocking sound was normal. I'm not a mechanic but can still tell that's not a normal sound of a healthy engine. Btw.....I know it's a long time ago and things were probably done differently then but did you have the 912 that crapped out in Topeka, KS inspected by a 3rd party before purchasing? Just curious how common incompetent PPI's are.

Can’t you just send back the vehicle? Unsure of your laws in your state and paperwork you signed but most dealers have a few day buyback guarantee. I’m sure you already looked into it but this may be a conversation you want to have with the dealer. Immediately when you took possession you brought up your concern, hopefully documented. Even if you get it checked, that will always be in the back of your mind... You won’t be able to fully enjoy the ride knowing that the sound exist.

As many other guys have brought up, we feel for ya. I cringe whenever I read something like this. Hopefully you will have a resolution to this soon.

Are there any final results? Is it a bore score or not?
This is an amazing and special car with X51 and a manual transmission system!
I hope bro hear that everything is good.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed
