That being said, I purchased my Seal Gray Coupe in San Diego as I wasn't having much luck finding gray over black here in the Bay Area.

As others have stated, there is huge market and supply of cars in Southern California. Makes sense, it's a top 3 market and very superficial (no offense to our SoCal members) so lotsa nice cars for sale!

Oh, I'm fully (and painfully) aware of that.

Yep. If the car has something that makes it a bit unique, it will still sell well. These 996 turbos had the usual spring/summer bump up but not the gains like recent years and now prices have softened. Sellers are still asking higher prices but run of the mill turbos aren't selling. As someone who has been watching the market almost daily, I am still seeing so many of the same turbo cars listed for 4 months or more. Look at the 996TTs that have been on the for sale board here for a long time. BAT usually brings a price premium but even those prices have had a downward trend since the latter part of August. There isn't much demand for cabs, tiptronics and cars much above 60k miles unless they are really priced to sell.

The LA one mentioned above (https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sf...960810681.html) has been bouncing around a number of the popular car selling websites since spring.
I think you contradict yourself in this post, highlighted by the bolded portion (emphasis mine).

If prices have "remained flat", it's because the cars you see on offer are the Cabs and/or Tiptronics and/or high miles, and the "flat prices" have those examples averaged in. Low mile 6 speed coupes are not entering the market as often as they were 3 years ago, and if they are, the prices are higher than they were then.

It certainly is a shame.

Definitely agree. "Bulletproofed" black/black 6 speed coupe here. I got in on mine at 40k and I wouldn't sell for less than 50k (returned to stock-ish).

Seems like a decent setup w/ good parts. For a few bucks more, mine is nicer (though I am biased ) and has black interior!

I looked at this car a year ago and I nearly bought it.But then a 2003 with 19k miles showed up and I bought that.
The black cab was very nice. I did have a ppi and the only thing lacking was a broken boot in the front, but other wise in great shape. Very solid seller as well.

IMHO, you are looking at the wrong things in your search. Those aren't even in my top-ten list for picking a great 996 Turbo...

Second gear pop-outs you very rarely hear about any more, as mentioned, it seemed like the cars that had that potential issue have already been addressed.

Coolant lines can and do pop, but it's not a catastrophic failure (unless you spin the car behind you on the track), and the popped coolant pipe can be re-epoxied without pulling the engine. I'd much rather have a car that has never had its engine pulled than one that was pulled and welding by an unknown shop doing unknown quality work. If your planning on lots of track days, yes, it's an important upgrade. Otherwise, no signs of leaks, no worries.

Cosmetic condition, inside and out. Fully sorted boost lines and clutch mechanism. Not hacked with the wrong upgrades or old upgrades that are no longer relevant. Refreshed items such as coils, plugs, fuel filter, brakes, rotors, shocks, tires, upgraded wheels if your into that, a modern, top quality exhaust if your into that, etc.

Torn boot is a bit of a PITA to fix but really nothing in the scope of things.... If you can live with a tip, looks like a decent car.

Speed yellow, manual, nice rims. Checks a lot of boxes when I was looking. Gorgeous.
