I've been on the hunt for about 4 months, but I started off looking at 993s. Was looking for a 996 Turbo for about 2 months.
Talk about a car with wild variances in value... Plus they all inevitability have valve guide issues and unless it's been done (and documented) you're looking at a 15k+ repair bill with all the "while you're in there" stuff.

Three Wheelin'
About 4-6 months. I looked at and passed on several cars during my hunt. One had a bad PPI, one was a loud and laggy X50, one had too many mods (19s, big brakes, GT3 seats) for my taste. Ended up with a bone stocker driven by a septegenarian.

Just saw this in SF Bay Area Craiglist. Looks too good to be true, but the guy did post a VIN. I know nothing about the car. https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto...457686666.html

Porkers - silver black red. Dime a dozen.
996 every other car was seal grey.
That color vanishes at twilight - saw a TT get hit back in 03 at dusk.
Wasn’t involved, but to be honest I didn’t see the thing either until I saw brake lights...
Seen a few yellows, a few blues, hardly any greens. The dark reds are nice in person.
You’ll find it. Just hang in there.

Drifting
I looked 6-8 months for my Midnight Blue TT. It's only the second Midnight Blue I saw advertised in that time that was in my price bracket. The first one sold within 12 hours.

It's hard enough to find a well-cared for 996TT at a reasonable price, that insisting on a particular, especially a rare color or color combination, will most likely ensure a very lengthy wait. Most people who buy cars like this will not own them for the duration, they will own them for anywhere from 6 months to maybe 5 years. Obviously there will be exceptions. Unless you are the sort of person who enjoys hunting for used cars, being too specific on what you want can waste a lot of time.
