Brought my car in for the TIG welding of the coolant pipes.

Oh yeah along with a few other items: GT2 deck lid, F&S performance clutch kit, 5 bar FPR, check valves, coolant reservoir, etc. Pics to come when my baby is done.

I have not done the welding of my pipes. I don't track my car. Should I still consider doing this given that my car is 100% street? Has anyone heard of the pipes failing on a car like mine?

Yes, I had 2 friends who had cars fail during normal street driving, one with 26k miles other with 50k.

My mechanic recently retired from the local Porsche dealer and now does work for me at his house. He was unaware of the issue. That tells me it is a pretty rare issue. I've been aware but thought it was from being in tune with the track community.

Yes. The day before I brought my car, another turbo came in after blowing a coolant pipe, while driving on the freeway. Luckily he was able to control the car and stop safely.

Then my indy showed me an engine he pulled a few days before out of a wrecked turbo. He pointed out where you can see the glued fittings were starting to back out.

It allows you to start the car without having the clutch depressed. This saves quite a bit of wear and tear on the engine. All ROW cars have this feature but the US DOT requires the clutch to be depressed to start the car.

Obviously the car has to be neutral. What wear does reduce on the engine?
