My scare was the thought that I might need a 20k rebuild on a car that was maybe worth only low thirties. I worried that I had just lost a good part of my "investment". After much procrastination I took it to a Porsche Indy. It turned out to be a loose spark plug. After eval and fix the total bill was $918.00. I have never been so happy to pay someone a grand to tighten my spark plug! Still, I worry now that I might loose my entire investment should the car break... I've had 2 previous 996 non-turbos that kicked me to the curb like an angry ex-wife when they suffered catastrophic failure. These worries now in the back of my mind with the 996tt ...it kinda takes away from the fun of driving it. I think I'll sell. craig

Base 996 are junk period. But I understand, I used to be into Evos and eclipses/talons. I've blown so many up, that it does make you worry about things, sometimes (most times) unnecessarily .

It now has 613,000+ miles on it and when the engine was last out at 383,000 we welded the coolant lines, as a precaution only - they were not leaking at that point thankfully

@T2 is this on the original engine and transmission? Or did you replace/rebuild anything significant?

I can't imagine your tire bill... you must be replacing 4 sets of rears per year! Ouch.
Any tips to get more mileage out of them?

600k is impressive. If you don't mind sharing, have you added what you put into maintenance and service repairs(ballpark is enough)? Most I've ever put on a vehicle is a 01 Ford F350 Diesel with 325k miles. Had about 5-6 sets of tires, 2 transmission, 2 water pumps, rebuilt steering and suspension parts once, 1 transfer case, driveline, 3 sets of lock hubs, 6 batteries. Sounds like a lot but towed heavily with it so not bad at all. I've never keeped a gas engine vehicle pass 100k, but I know with regular maintenance most cars these days can drive way past 100k. Would love to see the 1 million mile mark. Believe the moderators should give you a sticky thread just for your car.
