That's two of us who caught fire in a month....guys.....I think this points up the logic and sensibility for having a fire extinguisher in the car. I'm buying a halon as my next "mod"/

Porsches (964, 993, etc.) have always had fire related recalls you just don't hear about them as often as you do the Italian fires. About 1000 MY03 996TT were recalled because the power steering pressure line was coming loose and dumping Pentosin all over the exhaust.

944s had one recall too ( already in the '80s ) , about fuel lines cracking and leaking just above the exhaust manifold. Few of those burn every year because of that.

Why was it only the year 2003? would have thought that they had sorted all the gremlins out and if anything such a recall should have been for the 2000 cars surely.

Dave - Man, sorry to hear about that! Isn't that the Turbo you got at Hendrick? And no, I am not trying to blame Hendrick in any way.

Did that make the news where you live? Sorry to see another wounded soldier. Glad you walked away. Who is the person on this board that sells Halon extinguishers at a reasonble price?

Performance Parts sells Halon fire extinguishers. I bought a 5 pounder for $229. Maybe it's overkill but at least I'm prepared. Other prices start at $103. for 1.4 pounds.

That's disturbing, really not a nice thing to see.

Good luck with your next!

It is disturbing to see the car like that and wonder about some common cause failure in the 996TT, but glad no one was hurt. Did you hear anything that alerted you or just see the smoke?

Folks I must give some caution here.. There are two issues.. One being the hose fitting and then the other being the actual power steering pump.

If the pump fails you also are at risk. However, you have a warning sign.. A high pitch squeel...

The pump issue affects all years..

I figured out who sells the Halon tanks. It's Gene, and he hangs around here and Pelican. i just bought a 6 lb. tank for $109 delivered. He agrees that a 2.5 lb. is just not enough if you really need it. He sends refilled tanks that operate fine, and if you need a refill down the road, it's real cheap too.

You can reach him at:

dcbvi@hotmail.com

Good luck....better to be safe than sorry. I've been carrying around a Kidde just to be safe, but I know that that kind of tank can cause more damage than good. This thread inspired me to get the right stuff.

Every P-car needs a fire extinguisher and I'm not talking about a small one! Put the largest one in your car you can!! I suggest either a 5 or 6 lb. halon or halotron!!!!!!
